What is Smiths Prosthetic Deadener?
Smiths Deadener is a silicone additive that lowers the Shore hardness of cured platinum silicone without reducing its mechanical strength. You add it to Part A of your PlatSil silicone before mixing with Part B. The more Deadener you use, the softer and more flexible the finished piece, making it ideal for moving facial areas such as eyelids, cheeks and neck.
How much Deadener you add determines how soft and flexible your silicone becomes. Think of it like adding water to clay: the more you add, the more pliable the material feels. The right ratio depends on which PlatSil variant you are working with: For most facial prosthetics, SFX artists often use more Deadener than silicone so the piece follows facial movement and skin naturally.

How to use Smiths Prosthetic Deadener
- Add the Deadener to Part A of your platinum silicone before mixing with Part B. Stir thoroughly until you have a homogeneous mixture.
- Determine your maximum ratio based on your PlatSil variant: up to 300% for Gel-10, up to 100% for Gel-25, and for Gel-00 you will usually need much smaller amounts.
- Add silicone pigment to Part B before mixing if you want a skin-toned colour without losing working time.
- Combine Part A (silicone + Deadener) with Part B and mix to an even consistency.
- Pour or apply within the working time of your chosen PlatSil variant and allow to cure.
Important tip: encapsulating
The silicone-Deadener combination remains slightly tacky and soft after curing. Always encapsulate your prosthetic with Mouldlife Baldiez or Super Baldiez to blend the edges seamlessly and protect the skin layer during use.
