Smiths Prosthetic Deadener, 500g
Smiths Prosthetic Deadener is a softening additive for platinum-cure silicones by Polytek, used to create flexible, skin-like SFX prosthetics for film, theatre and Halloween. By mixing Deadener into your silicone, you get a prosthetic that moves naturally with the skin rather than sitting stiffly on top of it.
- Industry-standard softener for platinum-cure silicones
- Makes prosthetics pliable and skin-like in movement
- Compatible with PlatSil Gel-00, Gel-10 and Gel-25
- Add up to 300% by weight (depending on PlatSil variant)
- 500g bottle - ideal for individual projects or first-time use
What SFX prosthetics do you make with Smiths Deadener?
Smiths Deadener is a silicone additive that reduces the Shore hardness of cured platinum silicone without affecting its mechanical strength. You add it to Part A of your PlatSil silicone before mixing with Part B. The more Deadener you add, the softer and more flexible the result - ideal for facial prosthetics on eyelids, cheeks and the neck.
Think of it like adding water to clay: the more you add, the more pliable the material becomes. How much you use depends on which PlatSil variant you are working with. For most facial prosthetics, prosthetic artists often use more Deadener than silicone, so the finished piece moves naturally with facial expressions and skin movement.
Why choose the 500g size over the 1kg?
The 500g bottle is well suited for individual prosthetic builds or as a first purchase when you are finding your preferred Deadener ratio for a given PlatSil variant. Because the ideal ratio varies per project, starting with 500g gives you room to experiment before committing to a larger quantity.
Choose this if you are working on a single production or want to test how much Deadener suits your workflow before scaling up to the Smiths Prosthetic Deadener 1kg for longer runs.
How to use Smiths Prosthetic Deadener
- Add the Deadener to Part A of your platinum silicone before mixing with Part B. Stir thoroughly until fully combined.
- Set your ratio based on your PlatSil variant: up to 300% with Gel-10, up to 100% with Gel-25, and typically a smaller amount with Gel-00.
- Add silicone pigment to Part B before mixing if you want a direct skin tone, without losing working time.
- Combine Part A (silicone + Deadener) with Part B and mix to a uniform consistency.
- Pour or apply within the working time of your chosen PlatSil variant and leave to cure.
Encapsulating your prosthetic
Cured silicone with Deadener remains slightly tacky and soft on the surface. Always encapsulate your prosthetic with Mouldlife Baldiez or Super Baldiez to blend the edges seamlessly and protect the skin surface during wear.
