What does PlatThix do for your prosthetics and mould work?
PlatThix is a thixotropic additive that makes liquid platinum silicone thicker and easier to brush on. While you stir or apply it, the silicone remains workable and creamy. Once you stop, it firms back up, which means it stays put on vertical surfaces and holds fine detail in deep undercuts.
It's designed for platinum-cure systems and has minimal effect on cure time. Use it with Polytek PlatSil Gel-00, PlatSil Gel-10 or Gel-25. For tin-cure silicones like Transil 20, Tinthix is the right choice instead.
When do you need a silicone thickener?
Liquid silicone is great for pouring, but brushing it onto a sculpt or mould face is a different story. Without a thickener, it runs off vertical areas before it cures. PlatThix gives you brush-coat control without introducing air bubbles or significantly slowing the cure.
Choose PlatThix when you're building up skin-effect layers on a prosthetic, coating a detailed mould or working on any vertical surface where runny silicone would cause problems. For tin-cure silicones, use Tinthix instead.
How to use PlatThix
Mix Part A and Part B of your PlatSil silicone thoroughly first. Then add PlatThix at a maximum of 5% of the total mixed silicone weight. Stir well until you have a smooth, even consistency, and apply with a brush or spatula to your sculpt or mould. Always test on a small batch first to find the right amount for your specific application.
Pro tip: Add PlatThix only after Part A and Part B are fully combined. Work in thin layers to capture fine detail, and stay within the working time of your chosen PlatSil variant. Always check the technical bulletin for your specific PlatSil product.
