Everything about Superstar Face Paint Palettes
Superstar is a Dutch face paint brand with a long history. The palettes in this category contain water-based face paint on a glycerine base: easy to blend, well pigmented and suitable for beginners and experienced face painters alike.
Linda Gloudemans, owner of SchminkenGrime.nl, works with Superstar regularly at events, workshops and training sessions. Her background as a make-up artist, trainer and examiner means she knows exactly which palettes are practical for which kind of work.
What's in this category?
You'll find two types of ready-to-use Superstar palette here:
- Themed palettes with colours chosen around a specific subject, including Unicorn, Holland, Sprookjes en Dieren, Shimmer and Pastel, Botanical, Skintones, Fearsome Faces, Sparkling Faces, Syllie Faces, Halloween, Summer Festival and Blue Lagoon
- Colour-set palettes with a fixed colour mix, such as Bright 6 and Bright 12
- Palette with book, such as the Fearsome Faces paint palette and book, which comes with both the colours and an instruction booklet
Which palette should you choose?
The right palette depends mainly on what looks you repeat most and how far along you are with face painting.
Just starting out? A palette is a natural first step. You get several colours in one convenient case without having to build a set from scratch. Themed palettes like Unicorn, Sprookjes en Dieren and Syllie Faces are great for children's parties and face painting at school events. Halloween and Fearsome Faces are built around darker designs and character make-up.
Working on location or taking on different jobs? Choose a palette that fits the event: Holland works well for parades and sports events, Summer Festival and Blue Lagoon for festivals, Bright 6 or Bright 12 as a versatile colour set to have on hand.
Superstar palettes are not refillable. If you want more colours or different shades later on, you can build your collection with individual Superstar Face Paint pots. The colour range there is much wider than what fits in a single palette.
How to use a Superstar palette
Dampen your brush or sponge lightly with clean water and stroke it over the face paint in the palette. Work towards a creamy consistency: not too dry, but not too wet either. Then apply the colour in thin layers for smooth, even coverage.
For sponge work, wet the sponge and squeeze it out well before use. You can also work with a dry sponge and activate the paint lightly with a small water spray bottle.
Linda likes to use the Diamond FX Sponge Yellow for flat coverage and blending. For lines, swirls and detail work, take a look at the FBFX face paint brushes.
Removing face paint
Superstar water-based face paint comes off with a damp face cloth or Remover Towel, lukewarm water and a mild soap or baby shampoo.
Do not scrub, and avoid baby wipes. These can irritate the skin, especially on children or anyone with sensitive skin. Is the skin a little dry after removal? Apply a gentle moisturiser.
Storing your palette
After use, wipe the colours in the palette clean with a sponge or cloth. Leave the palette to dry without the lid on. Only put the lid back once the paint is fully dry.
Store your palette somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight. Sunlight and heat can soften water-based face paint. Has a colour gone soft? Put the palette in the fridge for a while to firm it back up.
What do you use Superstar palettes for?
- Children's face painting at parties, schools, markets and events
- Face painting and body paint for festivals and photo shoots
- Halloween and character make-up, with the Halloween and Fearsome Faces palettes
- Parades, pantomime and themed events, for example with the Holland palette
- Cosplay and fantasy looks
- Practising at home with a set colour selection
