Key-Pigments Silicone Pigment Red Iron, 50 g

Key-Pigments Silicone Pigment Red Iron is a highly concentrated colourant for warming or adding redness to platinum silicone, developed for adjusting undertones in silicone prosthetics. Unlike the Flesh variants, Red Iron is not a ready-to-use skin tone but an undertone corrector you blend with other Key-Pigments or base colours to reach your desired result.

  • Highly concentrated red-iron undertone base for platinum silicone
  • Developed by Neill Gorton for SFX prosthetics
  • 50 g bottle, sufficient for numerous prosthetic batches
  • Consistent colour results across multiple batches
  • Compatible with PlatSil Gel and Sculpt Gel

What are Key-Pigments Silicone Pigments?

Key-Pigments are colour pastes formulated specifically for platinum silicone. You mix them into your silicone before it cures, ensuring even colour distribution without compromising the cure. The system was developed by SFX legend Neill Gorton to deliver consistent, lifelike skin tones across multiple prosthetic batches.

The Key-Pigments range includes four direct skin-tone colours (Pale Flesh, Warm Flesh, Medium Flesh, Dark Flesh) and two mixing bases (Red Iron and Yellow Ochre) for fine-tuning undertones.

Why choose Key-Pigments Red Iron?

Red Iron is not a standalone skin tone. It is a targeted undertone corrector that shifts your silicone towards warmer, ruddier tones. Use it when a Flesh variant reads too cool or too neutral for your reference skin tone. A small amount goes a long way, and it blends predictably with the other colours in the range.

Choose Red Iron when you need to warm up a Pale Flesh for a rosier complexion, punch up the redness in a wound or burn prosthetic, or match a skin tone with strong warm undertones. It works in all common platinum silicones including PlatSil Gel and Sculpt Gel.

How to use Key-Pigments Red Iron

  1. Add the pigment to Part B of your platinum silicone before combining it with Part A. This preserves your full working time and ensures the colour is evenly distributed before the cure begins.
  2. Start with a single drop and build up gradually until you reach the undertone you are after.
  3. Using a deadener for skin-like flexibility? Add the pigment to Part B, add the Smiths Prosthetic Deadener to Part A, then combine both parts.
  4. Use a separate spatula or mixing stick per colour to avoid cross-contamination between pots.
  5. Test your mix on a small amount before colouring a full silicone batch.

Important tips

  • Keep your dosage around 0.5% of total silicone weight for optimal dispersion without cure inhibition.
  • Dose carefully: these pigments are highly concentrated, and too large a drop can make your mix unusably dark.
  • Store the bottle tightly sealed in a cool, dry place.
  • Shake or stir the pigment before use to re-disperse any settled pigment.
