Everything about Superstar Fake Blood
Superstar is a Dutch makeup brand with a long history. The fake blood from Superstar works for wounds, cuts, grazes and mouth blood effects on stage, on camera or as part of a Halloween look. You'll find different shades and consistencies in this category, plus blood capsules.
Linda Gloudemans, owner of SchminkenGrime.nl, works as a make-up artist at events, develops and teaches the NHA distance-learning course on theatrical make-up, and serves as examiner for the Dutch vocational programme Allround Make-Up & Hair Artist. She uses fake blood in workshops, at events and in her training sessions, so she knows which type of blood suits which wound and which look.
What's in this category?
The Superstar fake blood range is built around four formulas plus blood capsules:
- Clear Thin in 20, 50, 100 and 250 ml: free-flowing, runs easily, bright red colour
- Clear Thick Clotting in 20, 50, 100 and 250 ml: thicker consistency, holds its shape better on skin
- Bright Red Clotting in 20, 50, 100 and 250 ml: a vivid, intense red tone
- Dark Thick Clotting in 20, 50, 100 and 250 ml: a deeper, darker red for character looks
- Blood Capsules in sets of 5 or 12: for mouth blood effects in theatre and film
Which fake blood do you choose?
The choice comes down to two things: how fresh the wound should look, and how fluid you need the blood to be on the skin.
Clear versus dark. Clear blood has a bright, vivid red. Dark blood has a deeper tone. For a single scene you can combine both, for example clear blood along the edge of a fresh cut and dark blood in the deeper part of the wound.
Thick versus thin. Thin fake blood flows and drips across the skin. Thick fake blood holds its shape better and gives volume inside a wound or as a dried drip.
Blood capsules. Blood capsules contain blood powder. Place a capsule in the mouth. Saliva dissolves the powder to form blood that flows from the mouth. No biting required: the saliva does the work.
How do you use Superstar fake blood?
Don't apply directly from the bottle onto skin. Pour a small amount into a clean cup and work from there with a brush, sponge or your fingers. This keeps the blood remaining in the bottle clean for next time.
For a fresh cut, apply thin blood along the edge of the wound and let it run downward. For a deeper wound, build a 3D effect first with wax or latex, then fill with thick fake blood.
For fine lines, drips and detail work, take a look at the FBFX makeup brushes.
Removing fake blood
Remove Superstar fake blood from skin with lukewarm water and a mild soap or baby shampoo. Work gently and in stages. A flannel or Remover Towel helps lift any remaining traces.
Don't scrub and avoid baby wipes. These can irritate the skin, especially on children or sensitive skin types. Is the skin a little dry after removal? Apply a mild moisturising cream.
Watch out for clothing. Fake blood can stain fabric. Work with a towel or makeup cape over your model's shoulders and keep clothing you care about out of the way. Stains on fabric are not always washable.
Working safely with fake blood
- Do not apply to the eyes. Blood near the eye area is applied carefully under the eye, not on it.
- Do not swallow. Bottles of fake blood are for external use on skin only.
- For in-mouth effects, use the blood capsules.
- Do a patch test on the inside of the wrist for sensitive skin. Wait 30 seconds to 5 minutes for any reaction.
- If a reaction occurs, rinse the skin and seek medical advice if needed.
Storage
Store Superstar fake blood in a cool, dark place. Keep bottles tightly closed and away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Working from a cup? Discard any leftover blood after use and do not pour it back into the bottle.
