Ben Nye Cuts & Bruises Wheel (Compact)
The Ben Nye Cuts & Bruises Wheel (Compact) is a crème makeup wheel by Ben Nye for creating cuts and bruises in SFX work. The four colours cover the full timeline of an injury - from a fresh wound to a fading bruise - making it a practical set for theatre, film and Halloween looks.
- Crème formula (greasepaint), highly pigmented and blendable
- 4 SFX colours: Blood Red, Sapphire Blue, Forest Green, Yellow
- Works on skin, latex, gelatine, wax, silicone and prosthetics
- Compact: 0.5 oz / 14 g, approx. 50-300 applications
- Code: CK-3
Which cuts and bruise effects can you create with this wheel?
Each colour in this wheel represents a different stage of injury. Blood Red for fresh cuts and blood, Sapphire Blue for the deep centre of a bruise, Forest Green for the edges of an older bruise, and Yellow for the yellowing skin of the healing phase.
With just four colours, you can show multiple stages of the same injury. That makes it especially useful in theatre and film, where a character's injury needs to visually evolve across scenes.
When should you choose this wheel over individual crème colours?
Choose this wheel when you regularly create wounds and bruises and want all the essential tones in one compact palette. The colours work together straight away - no mixing separate pots to find the right combination.
The compact size fits easily into a kit bag or on a small workstation. At 50 to 300 applications per wheel, it holds up well for regular SFX use.
How to use it
Apply colours with a Mehron Latex Foam Sponge for soft, stippled transitions that mimic real skin texture. Use your fingers for warm blending, or a fine brush for sharp edges and details. You can also thin the colours on a mixing palette with 99% alcohol for a more transparent, sheer layer.
Pro tip: Start with Sapphire Blue as the deep base layer for the core of a bruise. Blend Forest Green around the edge, then dot Yellow at the outer perimeter for the healing phase. Finish with a touch of Blood Red at the wound edge - this layered approach makes the injury look far more convincing.
Setting and removing
Crème makeup needs to be set with a setting powder. Apply with a powder puff or brush, press gently, then dust off excess with a loose brush. Without setting, the makeup will transfer and smudge.
Remove with a gentle makeup remover such as Ben Nye Quick Cleanse, or with soap and water for lighter applications.
What can you use it for?
- Cuts and abrasions in SFX and prosthetic work
- Bruises at multiple stages - fresh to nearly healed
- Theatre and film: visible injuries that evolve across a storyline
- Halloween looks: combat damage, zombie wounds, battered characters
- Cosplay: realistic battle or trauma effects
- Applying over latex, gelatine, wax, silicone and prosthetics
