Ben Nye Burns & Blisters Wheel (Compact)
The Ben Nye Burns & Blisters Wheel (Compact) is a crème makeup wheel by Ben Nye for recreating burns and blisters on skin and prosthetics. The four colours follow the full spectrum of burn severity - from fresh red irritation through to deep charred tissue.
- Cream formula (grease makeup), highly pigmented
- 4 SFX colours for burn and blister effects
- Works on skin, latex, gelatine, wax, silicone and prosthetics
- Compact size: 0.5 oz / 14 g (50-300 applications)
- Suitable for professional use and first aid training simulations
What burn and blister effects can you create with this wheel?
The colour palette in this wheel is designed to follow a realistic burn progression. Burnt Coral and Fire Red cover the outer, inflamed edges. Medium Plum deepens the bruised, discoloured zones where blood pools beneath the surface. Charcoal Blue adds necrotic, charred tissue for more severe injuries.
Together they cover the full range from a minor first-degree burn to a dramatic third-degree wound. Useful when you need to switch quickly between injury grades on set or during a training exercise.
When should you choose this wheel over individual SFX colours?
Choose this wheel when you specifically need burns and blisters and don't want to hunt for the right combination of shades. The colours are matched to this single theme, so you can get straight to work without mixing from scratch.
The cream formula also works across multiple substrates - directly on skin as well as over latex, gelatine, wax, or silicone prosthetics. That flexibility makes it useful whether you're working flat or building on 3D appliances.
How to use
Apply with a Latex Foam Sponge for soft, stippled transitions that mimic the rough texture of burned skin. Use your fingers where you need a warmer, blended edge. For crisp lines and detail work, switch to a fine brush. You can also thin the cream on a mixing palette with 99% alcohol for a more transparent, sheer layer.
Pro tip: Start with Burnt Coral as a broad base across the whole wound area. Build Medium Plum into the centre for the deeper discolouration zone. Restrict Charcoal Blue to the darkest, most charred core areas only. Finish with Fire Red along the outer edges to suggest fresh inflammation. Layering in this order gives convincing depth straight away.
Setting and removing
Cream makeup needs to be set after application. Dust a setting powder over the finished look with a powder puff, then brush away any excess with a powder brush. Without setting, the cream stays vulnerable to touch and perspiration.
To remove, use a dedicated makeup remover on an oil or cream base. Soap and water works too, but a proper remover is gentler on the skin during longer shooting days.
What can you use it for?
- Film and TV productions with burn or explosion scenes
- First aid and emergency response training with realistic wound simulation
- Halloween and horror looks with burn or zombie-skin effects
- Theatre and live productions with SFX requirements
- Disaster response exercises and medical simulation events
