Ben Nye Bruise & Abrasions Wheel
The Ben Nye Bruise & Abrasions Wheel (EW-41) is a compact crème makeup wheel by Ben Nye for creating realistic bruises, contusions and abrasions at every stage of healing. The four colours cover everything from a fresh wound to a fading yellow bruise - purpose-built for SFX work.
- Crème formula (greasepaint), highly pigmented and blendable
- 4 SFX colours: Goldenrod, Maroon, Misty Violet, Fresh Cut
- 1 oz / 28 g - 16 to 100 applications per colour
- Works on skin, latex, gelatine, wax, silicone and prosthetics
- Compact wheel format, ready to use on set or on location
What bruise and wound effects can you create with this wheel?
The four colours span the full timeline of a bruise. Goldenrod and Misty Violet give you the yellow and purple tones of a healing contusion. Maroon and Fresh Cut handle fresh wound colour and sharp abrasion detail.
That means you can build anything from a brand-new injury to a days-old knuckle bruise - and everything in between.
When does this wheel beat buying individual colours?
These four shades are chosen specifically for bruise and abrasion work - already balanced and ready to layer. You get the right healing yellows, deep purples and wound tones in one compact case without hunting through individual pots. Choose this wheel if you regularly work on injury effects and want the right combination to hand straight away.
The soft crème formula blends easily with fingers or a sponge, which is a real advantage when you need the subtle gradients that make a bruise look three-dimensional and convincing.
How to use it
Pick up a small amount of crème on a damp latex foam sponge for soft, stippled transitions - or use your fingertips for warm blending. For sharp edges and fine detail, use a small brush. Build the effect in thin layers: start with the lightest colour as a base and add deeper tones where the injury is most intense.
Pro tip: For a convincing healing bruise, apply Goldenrod broadly across the outer area first. Add Misty Violet in the centre, then work Maroon into the core. A touch of Fresh Cut at the most recent point turns a flat effect into a genuinely three-dimensional injury.
Setting and removing
Set the crème makeup with a setting powder and a powder puff to make it sweat- and touch-resistant. Remove any excess powder with a loose brush afterwards.
For removal, an oil-based makeup remover or Ben Nye Quick Cleanse works best. Soap and water will do the job too, but a dedicated remover is more effective with heavier crème layers.
What can you use it for?
- Abrasions, cuts and grazes for film and theatre
- Bruises and contusions at every stage of healing
- SFX effects for Halloween attractions and scare mazes
- Trauma simulation for first responder and medical training
- Application directly on skin or over latex, gelatine, wax, silicone and prosthetics
