Ben Nye Bruise & Abrasions Wheel (Compact)
The Ben Nye Bruise & Abrasions Wheel (Compact) is a compact cream makeup palette by Ben Nye for creating realistic bruises, abrasions and cuts. The four colours cover the full range of wound and bruising effects at every stage of healing.
- Cream makeup (oil-based), not water-activated
- 4 SFX colours for bruises and abrasions
- Highly pigmented, soft blendable formula
- Works on skin, latex, gelatine, wax, silicone and prosthetics
- Compact size: 14g (0.5 oz), CK-4
What bruise and wound effects can you create with this wheel?
The four colours cover the full spectrum from a fresh bruise to the yellowing that comes with healing. Misty Violet and Maroon give you the purple-red tones of new bruising. Goldenrod adds the yellow-green discolouration of older injuries. Fresh Cut handles the red tones of abrasions and surface cuts.
Together, the four colours let you build convincing injuries that look days old - or just happened.
When should you choose this wheel over individual cream colours?
Choose this wheel if you want to create bruise and wound effects at different stages without hunting down individual colours. The four shades are designed to work together as a complete base set for bruising and abrasions.
The compact format is practical for on-location work: small enough to fit in a kit bag, but good for 50 to 300 applications.
How to use
Apply the cream makeup with a latex foam sponge for soft, stippled transitions - ideal for the mottled look of real bruising. Working with your fingers lets you blend the formula easily using body heat. For sharp edges and detail work, use a fine brush. Set afterwards with a setting powder to make the makeup water-resistant.
Pro tip: Start with a thin layer of Misty Violet as the base of the bruise, build Maroon over the centre for fresh colour, and blend Goldenrod along the edges to show the healing progression. Add Fresh Cut where the skin is visibly broken - that layered approach gives you the depth of a real injury.
Setting and removing
Oil-based cream makeup always needs a fixative. Dust the finished look with setting powder using a powder puff. This makes the makeup water-resistant and keeps the colours in place through sweat and long shoots.
Remove with an oil- or cream-based makeup remover such as Ben Nye Quick Cleanse. Water and soap alone won't fully remove cream makeup.
What can you use it for?
- Realistic bruises and contusions for film and television
- Abrasions and cuts for theatre and live performance
- SFX makeup for Halloween events and scare attractions
- Trauma simulation for medical training exercises
- Stage combat and actor makeup for fight scenes
