What is a Diamond FX split cake?
A split cake is a pot of water-based face paint with several colours side by side. Diamond FX split cakes are wax-based and made especially for the one stroke technique, where you pick up a colour blend with a single brush stroke. Why choose Diamond FX split cakes?
Thanks to the wax base the colours stay nicely separated and you work with strong coverage. You don't need to mix single colours, because the colour blend is already in the pot. That way you work quickly and crisply, even on busy face painting days.
How do you use a Diamond FX split cake?
Dampen a flat brush lightly and sweep it back and forth over the split cake a few times, in the direction of the stripes, so all the colours are on the bristles. Then set down your design in a single stroke. For faces you usually use a wide flat brush of about 2 to 2.5 cm. Too much water lets the colours run into each other, so build up gently. Water-based face paint sets by itself and doesn't need setting powder.
How do you remove Diamond FX face paint?
Use a mild soap with cold to lukewarm water. Warm water opens your pores, which lets the skin absorb the paint more easily, and that's exactly what you want to avoid. Gently rub the soap over the painted skin and repeat until the paint is gone. For stubborn colours you can use Diamond FX skin soap.

Always move your brush in the direction of the colour stripes, so the colours stay nicely separated. Use clean water so the colours stay pure and don't work too wet. Wipe the pots clean after use with a lightly damp face paint sponge and let them dry without the lid. Wash your brushes with a mild soap or Diamond FX brush soap, and store everything in a dark place at room temperature.

What is the one stroke technique?
With one stroke you pick up several colours at once with a single brush stroke. This way you create a colour blend in one movement, for example for a flower petal or wing.
Which brush do I use for a split cake?
A small split cake is 1 inch wide (about 2.5 cm). If you want to apply all the colours from the pot to the skin at once, choose the flat 1 inch brush or the angled 1 inch brush. If you want narrower bands, choose a narrower brush. We have the brushes in 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8 and 3/4 inch. The large split cakes are meant for use with a sponge. A petal sponge is handy if you want to work from the corner of the eye, but a regular face paint sponge works really well too.
Why do my colours run into each other?
You're probably working too wet. Dip your brush in a pot of water and wipe the bristles on the rim so the excess water comes out. Then activate the paint in the direction of the stripes, so the colours stay separated. In our free 4-part face painting series we cover this in detail.
Do I need setting powder?
No. Water-based face paint sets by itself on dry skin. Setting powder is for cream paint and foundation, not for water-based face paint.
Is Diamond FX vegan and gluten-free?
According to the manufacturer, Diamond FX face paint products are vegan: they contain no animal ingredients or by-products and are not tested on animals. The paint is not made in a gluten-free certified facility but, according to the manufacturer, contains no gluten. All colours are paraben-free and fragrance-free.
Ingredients of Diamond FX split cakes
The split cakes have the same base as the rest of the Diamond FX water-based face paint: Paraffin Wax, Petrolatum, Glycerin, Calcium Carbonate, Stearyl Alcohol, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Sodium Benzoate, Acacia Senegal, Dextrin, Water.
