What is Mehron Castor Sealer?

Mehron Castor Sealer is a liquid sealer based on castor oil (Ricinus Communis Seed Oil), developed specifically for latex surfaces. Castor oil naturally keeps latex and foam supple, protects against drying out and smooths the transition to the surrounding skin. This means Mehron Bald Cap and latex prosthetics stay looking natural for longer, with no visible edges.

For sealing scar wax, Extra Flesh and other wax modelling materials, use Mehron Fixative "A" Sealer instead, which is solvent-based and developed specifically for wax effects. Castor Sealer and Fixative "A" Sealer are not interchangeable but complementary sealers for different SFX materials.

How to use Castor Sealer

Step 1: apply latex or foam. Attach the latex prosthetic, bald cap or foam application using the standard SFX workflow with Mehron Spirit Gum. Press firmly and allow the adhesive to dry completely.

Step 2: apply Castor Sealer. Dip the applicator brush briefly into the bottle and apply a thin layer of Castor Sealer over the latex edge and the surrounding skin. Work from the edge towards the centre of the prosthetic so the transition is fully sealed.

Step 3: allow to absorb. Leave the sealer to absorb and dry for 10 to 20 minutes. During this time the castor oil bonds with the latex and the skin beneath, smoothing the transition flat. Step 4: optional second coat. For extra firm edges and a better gloss finish, apply a second thin layer once dry. Allow another 10 to 20 minutes to dry. Step 5: finish with make-up. Work over the whole application with cream or water-based make-up to match the prosthetic to the skin tone. Stipple the make-up with a non-latex foam sponge so the skin texture blends seamlessly. Pro tip from Linda: for character looks that need to suggest wet or glistening skin (zombie, fever patient, sweat shot), apply a third thin layer of Castor Sealer after the make-up. The gloss finish creates the illusion of perspiration or moist skin without needing any additional products.

Setting and removing

The combination of Spirit Gum as adhesive and Castor Sealer as topcoat keeps latex prosthetics and bald caps firmly in place during long stage days and film shoots. For extra security you can powder the make-up with Mehron Setting Powder if you prefer a matte skin finish.

To remove, lift a corner of the latex edge and drip Mehron Spirit Gum Remover along the adhered edge. Leave for 10 to 20 seconds to loosen the adhesive, then peel the prosthetic away carefully. Clean the skin afterwards with warm water and soap, and apply a nourishing cream to help the skin recover.
