What SFX wounds and injuries can you create with Extra Flesh?

Extra Flesh is designed for effects that go beyond what scar wax can do: large burns, torn flesh, deep lacerations, and exposed tissue. The fibrous pulp structure mimics damaged skin tissue and blends almost seamlessly into the surrounding skin once you colour-match it with cream make-up or water-activated face paint.

Because of its porous build-up, blood effects soak into the pulp and add extra depth and realism. For extreme dismemberment effects, you can layer Extra Flesh with tissue paper between coats for even more dimension.

When do you choose Extra Flesh over scar wax?

Where scar wax is limited to small raised areas, Extra Flesh lets you build large, complex 3D effects in multiple layers. The pulp gives volume without weighing down on the skin or lifting at the edges. Tear pieces into rough shapes for raw wound edges, or smooth them out with a spatula for a more controlled finish.

Choose Extra Flesh when you need a wound effect that reads clearly from a distance, holds through a long performance day, and accepts heavy blood products without sliding off. For smaller scars and light texture work, Mehron Scar Wax is still the quicker option.

How to use Extra Flesh

Step 1: prep the skin. Clean the skin thoroughly to remove all oils, dirt, and make-up. For extra adhesion, apply a thin layer of Mehron Spirit Gum to the skin and allow it to dry until tacky.

Step 2: prep the material. Scrape a small amount of Extra Flesh from the pot and knead it briefly between your fingers until it softens. Tear it into the rough shape you need, keeping the edges ragged for a natural wound look.

Step 3: model the effect. Press Extra Flesh gently onto the skin and build up the effect in layers. Use a Stainless Steel Spatula to smooth edges and blend the transition into the skin. A small amount of vaseline on your tools prevents the material from sticking. Step 4: seal with Fixative A. Allow Extra Flesh to air-dry for a few minutes. Then apply a thin layer of Mehron Fixative "A" Sealer with the applicator brush to seal the pulp. Allow the sealer to dry for 1 to 2 minutes. Step 5: finish with make-up and blood. Colour-match the effect using cream make-up or water-activated face paint. Add blood effects with Mehron Coagulated Blood Gel for wound texture or Mehron Stage Blood for dripping blood. Pro tip: for extreme dismemberment effects like torn skin, layer two coats of Extra Flesh with small pieces of tissue paper in between. Let each layer dry before applying the next, and only seal with Fixative A once the full effect is built up. This gives depth without the material cracking along the tissue fibres.

Setting and removing

The combination of Spirit Gum as a base and Fixative A as a topcoat keeps Extra Flesh firmly in place through long performance days, photoshoots, and film shoots. For very sweaty skin, apply a second thin coat of Fixative A after modelling.

To remove, scrape off the bulk of the Extra Flesh carefully with a Stainless Steel Spatula. Remove remaining Fixative A and adhesive with Mehron Spirit Gum Remover on a cotton pad. Then cleanse the skin with warm water and soap, and apply a moisturiser to restore the skin's natural moisture balance.
