What is Mehron Spirit Gum?

Mehron Spirit Gum is a professional liquid skin adhesive widely used for bald caps, grime prosthetics, theatre make-up and special effects make-up. Once it dries on the skin, it forms a strong, flexible bond that holds up well during movement, facial expressions and perspiration.

The amber colour dries nearly transparent, leaving only a slight sheen on the skin. For applications where you'd rather avoid any shine - for example under fine crepe hair where the adhesive might show through - there's also a matte version available: Mehron Spirit Gum Matte (30ml).

How to use Spirit Gum

Step 1: prep the skin. Cleanse thoroughly to remove all skin oils, dirt and make-up. Spirit Gum bonds best to clean, dry skin.

Step 2: apply the adhesive. Use the applicator brush to apply a thin layer of Spirit Gum to the area where you want to place the prosthetic, crepe hair or wig.

Step 3: make it tacky. Let the adhesive dry for a few seconds, then gently tap it with your fingertip until it becomes sticky. This is when Spirit Gum bonds most strongly. Step 4: press and hold. Carefully press the prosthetic, bald cap, crepe hair beard or wig edge onto the adhesive and hold firmly for around 10 to 15 seconds. Step 5: blend with make-up. Once the adhesive is completely dry, apply cream make-up or water-activated face paint over the edges to blend the transition seamlessly. Pro tip from Linda: need extra hold on a perspiring skin? Apply two thin layers instead of one thick layer. Let the first layer become tacky before applying the second. This gives the adhesive a better grip on both the skin and the prosthetic.

Setting and removing

Spirit Gum is popular for theatre, cosplay, Halloween and professional grime work because it stays firmly in place through movement and long wear times.

Never pull Spirit Gum off directly, as this can irritate the skin. Instead, use Mehron Spirit Gum Remover on a cotton pad. Apply a little remover along the edge of the adhesive and leave it to work for 10 to 20 seconds until the adhesive loosens from the skin. Cleanse the area afterwards with warm water and soap.
