What is an alcohol activated SFX palette?

Alcohol activated make-up is activated not with water, but with cosmetic alcohol or a dedicated activator like EBA Fuel. That means it adheres to surfaces where water-based make-up simply slides off: foam latex, silicone, gelatine and fabric. Once applied and dry, it's waterproof, transfer-resistant, and stays put for hours - even under heavy film lighting or warm studio conditions.

Who is this palette for?

This palette suits pro SFX artists who want to work compact, and advanced hobbyists who want more colour options than a SLIM palette offers. Twelve colours in 25x25mm pans travel with you to any set or location without sacrificing choice. It replaces a handful of individual pots and carries you through hundreds of looks.

New to alcohol activated make-up? Start with thin washes and build up gradually - the pigments are highly concentrated, so less really is more. Expect a few practice sessions before you feel fully comfortable with the technique. This palette is designed for undead and horror effects. Not suitable for children's face painting at parties - for milder themed make-up see the Encore SFX palette.

What colours are in this palette?

The 12 colours are built around three functions: pale base tones (3 shades for the starting layer and dead skin), vein tones and blood (5 for realistic veins, mottled discolouration and blood), and dark accents (4 for depth, decay and heavy shadows). Use them individually or layer them together.

• Bruise Purple - purple for fresh bruising and lividity marks
• Intense Purple - deep purple for heavy decay and extreme horror
• Dirty Brown - smear tone for dirt, rotting flesh and weathering
• Night Swamp - dark green for swamp-like zombie and ghoul tones
• Charcoal - deep grey-black for heavy shadows and necrotic tissue

How to use it

Activate with EBA Fuel Spray or 99.9% isopropyl alcohol on a round brush or stipple brush. Work in thin washes - building up layers gives far more depth than one thick application. The make-up dries within seconds and is waterproof from that point on.

Pro tip: Start with Pale Dead as a base layer across the face. Work Vein Tone and Prime Blue in thin washes along the temples, eyelids and jawline. Stipple Nicotine Stain into skin folds and lip edges. Add Bruise Purple for lividity marks and deeper discolouration, then finish with Charcoal for heavy shadows in the eye sockets and hollow areas.

Skin safety and skin prep

The Encore formula uses cosmetic alcohol and FDA-compliant pigments. If you have sensitive skin, test on a small area inside the elbow first. Avoid application on broken skin, eye mucous membranes and lips.

For extra adhesion and protection against rubbing off, apply a thin layer of EBA ProSeal Spray or EBA H2O Seal before or after application.

Setting and removing

Alcohol activated make-up is intrinsically waterproof once dry - no extra setting product needed. To remove at the end of the day, you'll need a dedicated remover. Water and soap on their own won't cut it.
