What is an alcohol activated SFX palette?
Alcohol activated make-up is not activated with water but with cosmetic alcohol or a dedicated activator like EBA Fuel. This means it adheres to surfaces where water-based face paint slides off: foam latex, silicone, gelatine and fabric. Once applied, the make-up is waterproof, transfer-resistant and stays put for hours - even under heavy film lights or warm studio conditions.
Who is this palette for?
This palette suits professionals who work on location and want more colours than a Full-size palette offers, as well as advanced hobbyists building realistic post-mortem and autopsy effects. The 12 colours replace a collection of separate pots and carry through hundreds of looks.
New to alcohol activated make-up? Start with thin washes - a wash is a diluted, translucent layer - and build gradually. The pigments are strong, so less is more. This palette is designed for autopsy and post-mortem effects. Not intended for children's face painting at parties - for lighter horror looks see Encore SFX.
What colours are in this palette?
The 12 colours are built around three functions: body tissue as base (4 shades for waxy skin and flesh textures), blood and fluids (4 shades for fresh and clotted blood, bile and rancid fluids) and organs and shadow (4 shades for internal organ tones, discolouration and deep shadows). Use them individually or in combination.
- Tainted Tissue - pale waxy skin tone for dead skin
- Fetid Flesh - yellowish-brown for rotting flesh
- Tendon - off-white for tendons and connective tissue
- Decayed - deep brown for advanced decomposition
- Fresh Blood - bright red for fresh blood pooling
- Clot - dark red for clotted and coagulated blood
- Bile - yellow-green for bile and gastric fluids
- Rancid - olive green for putrid fluids and necrosis
- Liver - deep brownish-red for liver and internal organ tones
- Spleen - deep red-purple for spleen and internal discolouration
- Contusion - blue-purple for deep bruising and blood disorder effects
- Vein Tone - bluish-green for realistic veins
How to use it
Activate the make-up with EBA Fuel Spray or 99.9% isopropyl alcohol on a round brush or stipple brush. Work in thin washes - thin layers build more depth than one thick coat. The make-up dries within seconds and is then waterproof.
Pro tip: Start with Tainted Tissue as a base layer on skin or prosthetic. Apply thin washes of Vein Tone and Contusion along temples and wrists for vein detail. Stipple Fetid Flesh into skin folds for decomposition texture. Add depth with Liver or Spleen in recesses, then finish with Clot or Fresh Blood for blood pooling on wounds and openings.
Skin safety and skin prep
The Encore formula uses cosmetic alcohol and FDA-compliant pigments. For sensitive skin: patch test on the inside of the elbow first. Avoid application on broken skin, eye mucous membranes and lips.
For extra adhesion and resistance to smudging, apply a thin layer of EBA ProSeal Spray or EBA H2O Seal before or after application.
Setting and removing
Alcohol activated make-up is intrinsically waterproof once dry - no extra fixative needed. To remove at the end of the day you need a dedicated remover. Water and soap alone won't cut it.
- EBA Unveil - alcohol-free, hydrating remover for sensitive skin and the face
- EBA Vapore - alcohol-based remover for fast complete removal, including prosthetics
- Mouldlife Life-Wipes - make-up remover wipes that also remove skin adhesives such as Pros-Aide
What can you use it for?
- Film, TV and professional SFX make-up
- Theatre and stage productions with long performance runs
- Prosthetic work on foam latex and silicone
- Autopsy and post-mortem effects for medical simulations and film sets
- Realistic corpse make-up for haunt and horror attractions
