What is an alcohol activated SFX palette?

Alcohol activated make-up is not activated with water but with cosmetic alcohol or a dedicated activator such as EBA Fuel. This means it adheres to surfaces where water-based face paint slides off: foam latex, silicone, gelatine and fabric. Once applied the make-up is waterproof, transfer-resistant and stays put for hours, even under heavy film lights or warm studio conditions.

Who is this palette for?

This palette is built for SFX artists, make-up artists and prosthetics practitioners who need realistic blood effects that stay put and don't smear. Film, TV, theatre, haunted attractions: anywhere that blood needs to look real and stay there. The palette replaces a collection of individual pots and holds up through hundreds of looks.

New to alcohol activated make-up? Start with thin washes and build gradually. The pigments are strong, so less is more.

What colours are in this palette?

The 10 colours are built around three functions: fresh blood stages (3 shades for bright and fresh blood), aged and dried blood (3 shades for dried, coagulated and old blood) and bruise and vein tones (4 shades for bruising, venous tones and adjuster effects). Use them individually or layered.

• Prime Blood - full blood colour as base shade
• Bruise Red - deep red for wounds and wound colouring
• Aged Blood - brown-red for old and drying blood
• Dried Blood - dark brownish-red for fully dried scabs
• Vein Blood - deep blue-red for venous blood and vein effects
• Mauve - grey-purple for discolouring bruises and healing stages
• Bruise Purple - deep purple for fresh and severe bruising
• Prime Yellow - yellow-green for yellowing bruises and as an adjuster
• Prime Black - deep black for shadows and dark accents

How to use it

Activate with EBA Fuel Spray or 99.9% isopropyl alcohol on a round brush, stipple brush or sponge. Work in thin washes and build intensity layer by layer. The make-up dries within seconds and is then waterproof.

Pro tip: Start with Prime Blood as the base on the wound area. Work Aged Blood and Dried Blood over the edges for a crusting effect. Add Vein Blood for vein structures along the temples or wrists. Stipple Bruise Purple and Mauve around the wound for the discolouration of an older bruise. Finish with Prime Black for deep shadows in hollows and wound cavities.

Skin safety and skin prep

The Encore formula uses cosmetic alcohol and FDA-compliant pigments. For sensitive skin: test on a small area in the crook of your elbow first. Avoid application on broken skin, eye mucous membranes and lips.

For extra adhesion and protection against smearing, apply a thin layer of EBA ProSeal Spray or EBA H2O Seal before or after application.

Setting and removing

Alcohol activated make-up is intrinsically waterproof once dry. No additional fixative is needed. To remove at the end of the day you'll need a dedicated remover. Water and soap alone won't do the job.

10 alcohol-activated colours in EBA's signature magnetic refillable case with white mixing surface in the lid. Colours are in 38x38mm pans (1.5x1.5 inch), each 3.5g. Pans are individually replaceable: no need to discard the whole palette when one colour runs out. FDA-compliant ingredients, made in Costa Mesa (California, USA), not tested on animals.

Activate with EBA Fuel Spray 120ml (the official EBA activator, fine mist) or the smaller EBA Fuel 30ml for on the go.
