Encore Alcohol Activated Palette - Autopsy (by Bruce Fuller)
The Encore Alcohol Activated Palette - Autopsy is a professional waterproof SFX palette with 10 colours, designed by make-up effects master Bruce Spaulding Fuller. Specifically developed for realistic post-mortem and autopsy effects: from the waxy pallor of lifeless skin to coagulating blood and the tones of internal organs.
Bruce Spaulding Fuller worked on productions including Resident Evil, Predator 2, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Orville, American Horror Story and Goliath. What is an alcohol activated SFX palette?
Alcohol activated make-up is activated not with water but with cosmetic alcohol or a dedicated activator like EBA Fuel. That means it bonds to surfaces where water-based face paint simply slides off: foam latex, silicone, gelatine and fabric. Once applied it is waterproof, transfer-resistant and stays put for hours - even under heavy film lighting or warm studio conditions.
Who is this palette for?
This palette is built for professional SFX artists, film and TV make-up artists and theatre makers who work with prosthetics. It replaces a collection of individual colours and lasts through hundreds of looks. Advanced hobbyists who are seriously moving into prosthetic work will find it a complete starting point too.
New to alcohol activated make-up? Start with thin washes and build up gradually - the pigments are strong, so less is more. This palette is designed for autopsy and post-mortem effects. Not intended for children's face painting at parties - for lighter horror looks see the Encore SFX or Encore Tormented palettes.
What colours are in this palette?
The 10 colours are built around three functions: body tissue as a base (4 shades for skin and tissue textures), blood and fluids (3 colours for coagulating blood and bodily secretions) and organ and shadow tones (3 colours for internal organs and deep contrast). Use them individually or combined.
- Tendon - yellowish white for tendons and connective tissue
- Tainted Tissue - pale grey discoloured tissue tone
- Fetid Flesh - wan skin tone for lifeless flesh
- Contusion - blue-purple for bruising and livor mortis
- Clot - dark red coagulated blood
- Rancid - yellow-green tone for putrefaction and bile
- Bile - vivid yellow-green bile colour
- Spleen - deep blue-purple for spleen and organs
- Liver - brown-red for liver and deep tissue
- Decayed - grey-brown for advanced decomposition
How to use it
Activate the make-up with EBA Fuel Spray or 99.9% isopropyl alcohol on a round brush or stipple brush. Work in thin washes - thin layers build depth far better than a single heavy application. The make-up dries within seconds and is then waterproof.
Pro tip: Start with Fetid Flesh or Tainted Tissue as a pale base layer over the skin or prosthetic. Apply Contusion and Spleen in thin washes over raised areas and hollows for livor mortis. Stipple Bile and Rancid into cavities and around wound edges. Finish with Decayed and Clot for the deepest shadows and coagulated blood at wound borders.
Skin safety and skin prep
The Encore formula uses cosmetic alcohol and FDA-compliant pigments. For sensitive skin: patch-test on the inner elbow before full application. Avoid applying to broken skin, eye mucous membranes and lips.
For extra adhesion and protection against transfer, apply a thin layer of EBA ProSeal Spray or EBA H2O Seal before or after application.
Setting and removing
Alcohol activated make-up is intrinsically waterproof once dry - no extra setting product needed. To remove it at the end of the day you need a dedicated remover. Water and soap alone will not do the job.
- EBA Unveil - alcohol-free, moisturising remover for sensitive skin and the face
- EBA Vapore - alcohol-based remover for fast, complete removal, including on prosthetics
- Mouldlife Life-Wipes - make-up remover wipes that also tackle skin adhesives like Pros-Aide
What can you use it for?
- Film, TV and professional SFX make-up
- Theatre and stage productions with long performance runs
- Prosthetic work on foam latex and silicone
- Post-mortem and autopsy effects for medical dramas and thrillers
- Corpse and cadaver scenes for film, TV and live events
