What is an alcohol activated SFX palette?

Alcohol activated make-up is activated not with water but with cosmetic alcohol or a dedicated activator like EBA Fuel. This means it adheres to materials that water-based face paint slides right off: foam latex, silicone, gelatine and fabric. Once applied it is waterproof, transfer-resistant and stays put for hours - even under heavy film lights or warm studio conditions.

This palette is made for make-up artists and SFX professionals who regularly work with deep skin tones, hair colouring, or heavy contouring and shadowing. Think film and television productions, theatre, cosplay and hair work on prosthetics. The compact magnetic format with 12 colours replaces a set of loose jars and travels well for hundreds of looks.

New to alcohol activated make-up? Start with thin washes and build up gradually - the pigments are strong, so less is more. Expect a few practice sessions before you fully master the palette.

What colours are in this palette?

The 12 colours are built around three functions: neutral deep skin tones (4 N and W shades for base layers and skin cover-up), cool and red-based skin tones (3 C shades for undertones and discolourations) and adjusters and accents (2 adjuster colours for adjusting skin tones and creating deep shadows and dirt effects). Use them individually or blend together.

• N10 - deep neutral skin tone, cover-up and levelling
• W10 - warm deep skin tone, olive undertone
• W11 - very warm deep shade, yellow-brown undertone
• N12 - near-black neutral, deep skin base or hair
• N13 - dark neutral adjuster, shadow and deepening
• C9 - cool dark brown shade, red undertone
• C10 - deep cool skin tone, cool-red
• C11 - very deep cool shade, near mahogany
• C12 - deep cool dark shade, shadows and veins

How to use it

Activate the make-up with EBA Fuel Spray or 99.9% isopropyl alcohol on a round brush or stipple brush. Work in thin washes - thin layers build more depth than one heavy coat. The make-up dries within seconds and is then waterproof.

Pro tip: Start with N10 or W10 as a cover layer over skin or the prosthetic. Blend in C10 or C11 for cooler undertones. Work N12 or W12 in thin washes along the hairline and eye sockets for depth. Finish with N13 for the heaviest shadow areas, and use ORANGE ADJUSTER to warm up pale or grey-toned skin.

Skin safety and skin prep

The Encore formula is made with cosmetic alcohol and FDA-compliant pigments. For sensitive skin: test on a small patch inside the elbow first. Avoid application on broken skin, eye mucosa and lips.

For extra adhesion and protection against smudging, apply a thin layer of EBA ProSeal Spray or EBA H2O Seal before or after application.

Setting and removing

Alcohol activated make-up is intrinsically waterproof once dry - no additional fixative needed. To remove it at the end of the day you need a dedicated remover. Water and soap alone will not work.
