What is an alcohol activated SFX palette?

Alcohol activated make-up is not activated with water but with cosmetic alcohol or a dedicated activator like EBA Fuel. This means it adheres to surfaces where face paint simply slides off: foam latex, silicone, gelatine and fabric. Once applied and dry, the make-up is waterproof, transfer-resistant and stays put for hours, even under heavy film lighting or warm studio conditions.

New to alcohol activated make-up? Allow yourself a few practice evenings. Start with thin washes (a wash is a diluted, translucent layer) and build up gradually. The pigments are strong, so less is more.

What colours are in this palette?

The 5 colours are built around two functions: fresh and active blood shades (3 for direct wound effects at different stages) and aged blood and bruising (2 for closed wounds and contusion tones). Use them individually or layer them together.

• Vein Blood - dark red-blue for venous blood and deep injuries
• Dried Blood - brown-red for dried, older blood traces

How to use it

Activate the make-up with EBA Fuel Spray or 99.9% isopropyl alcohol on a brush or stipple brush. Work in thin washes - this builds depth without looking mask-like. The make-up dries within seconds and is then waterproof.

Pro tip: Start with Dried Blood as a base tone over the wound area. Apply Fresh Blood in the centre for the wet, active core. Work Vein Blood along the wound edges for depth. Finally, stipple Mauve in a wide ring around the outside for bruise discolouration, and touch the outermost edges with Aged Blood to suggest an older injury.

Skin safety and skin prep

The Encore formula uses cosmetic alcohol and FDA-compliant pigments. If you have sensitive skin, test on a small area in the crook of your elbow first. Avoid applying to broken skin, eye mucous membranes and lips.

For extra hold and protection against transfer, apply a thin layer of EBA ProSeal Spray or EBA H2O Seal before or after application.

Setting and removing

Alcohol activated make-up is intrinsically waterproof once dry. No extra fixative needed. To remove it at the end of the day, use a dedicated remover. Water and soap alone will not be enough.
