Ben Nye Old Character Wheel II (Compact)
The Ben Nye Old Character Wheel II (Compact) is a compact crème makeup wheel by Ben Nye, designed specifically for ageing effects on medium and deep skin tones. The four colours are calibrated for deeper melanin-rich complexions, so shadows, wrinkles and discolourations look genuinely convincing.
- Crème greasepaint, highly pigmented and easy to blend
- 4 colours for medium to deep skin tones
- Works on skin, latex, gelatine, wax, silicone and prosthetics
- Compact size: 14g (0.5 oz), 50-300 applications
- Professional character makeup for film, theatre and SFX
What ageing looks can you create with this wheel?
This wheel gives you the base colours for realistic age effects on darker complexions: wrinkle shadows, sagging skin areas, age spots and discolourations that actually match medium and deep skin tones. The colour set Light Brown (SC-3), Midnite Brown (CS-6), Maroon (CL-15) and Misty Violet (CL-17) covers both warm brunette shadows and cooler tones for veins and blemishes.
Misty Violet works well for puffy eyelids and visible veins. Maroon adds warmth to lips and skin that naturally deepen with age on darker complexions.
When do you choose this wheel over Old Character Wheel I?
The difference is in the skin tone these colours are calibrated for. Old Character Wheel II is built for medium and deep complexions, where light greys and pastel shadows simply don't read. Choose this wheel when you're ageing a character with a medium or deep skin tone and need shadows that actually sink in rather than sitting pale on top.
Choose this wheel when working on film or theatre productions where accurate representation of deeper skin tones matters and you don't want to spend time mixing or hunting for the right shade.
How to use it
Apply the crème makeup with a Latex Foam Sponge for stippled, soft transitions around the cheeks and eye area. Use your fingers to blend warm tones seamlessly. A fine brush works best for sharp wrinkle lines and detail work. The makeup applies directly to skin and over latex, gelatine, wax, silicone and prosthetics.
Pro tip: Start with Midnite Brown as your shadow tone in the nasolabial folds and eye sockets. Then place Misty Violet on the upper eyelid and temples. Use Maroon sparingly on the lips and cheeks for a realistic, healthy-looking age discolouration.
Setting and removing
Set the crème makeup with a setting powder using a powder puff to prevent smudging and improve longevity. To remove, an oil-based makeup remover like Ben Nye Quick Cleanse works best.
What can you use it for?

- Character makeup for theatre and musicals
- SFX makeup for elderly characters in Halloween attractions and live events
