Ben Nye Severe Exposure Wheel (Compact)
The Ben Nye Severe Exposure Wheel (Compact) is a crème makeup wheel by Ben Nye for simulating sunburned, wind-damaged and weather-beaten skin. The four colours cover the pink-to-red spectrum of skin that's been exposed to the elements.
- Crème/greasepaint formula, not water-activated
- 4 SFX colours: Capillary Stipple, Fire Red, Dark Sunburn, Dusty Rose
- Highly pigmented, soft cream formula, blendable
- Works on skin, latex, gelatine, wax, silicone and prosthetics
- Compact size: 14g (0.5 oz), 50-300 applications
What weather exposure and skin damage effects can you create?
The four colours in this wheel are matched to one specific tonal range: the pink-red spectrum of skin affected by exposure. That makes it ideal for sunburn, windburn, frostbite redness, rugged outdoor characters and broken capillaries.
Capillary Stipple is your base for fine vein detail. Fire Red gives intense flushing. Dark Sunburn adds deep, warm browning. Dusty Rose bridges the tones for seamless transitions.
When do you reach for this wheel over individual crème colours?
Reach for this wheel when building characters who've spent extended time outdoors: survivors, field soldiers, sailors, mountaineers or exhausted scouts. The four colours span the full tonal journey from light pink to deep sunburn - no hunting through separate pots.
The crème formula is especially useful over latex and prosthetics, where water-activated paint tends to crack. On skin, greasepaint holds better through sweat and movement once set.
How to use it
Apply with a Mehron Latex Foam Sponge for soft stippled transitions, or blend with your fingertips for a warmer result. For fine capillary detail with Capillary Stipple, use a fine brush. For a more translucent layer, mix a small amount with a drop of 99% alcohol on a palette.
Pro tip: Start with Dark Sunburn as a base on the most exposed areas - cheeks, nose, forehead. Blend Dusty Rose outward for a gradual fade. Stipple Fire Red onto the nose and cheekbones, then finish with Capillary Stipple along the nose bridge and cheeks for fine vein detail.
Setting and removing
Crème makeup needs to be set after application. Use a setting powder applied with a Powder Puff, then dust off excess with a powder brush. For extra durability, seal with a fixative spray.
To remove, use an oil-based makeup remover or Ben Nye Quick Cleanse. Crème makeup won't break down with soap and water alone - an oil-based remover is more effective and gentler on the skin.
What can you use it for?
- Sunburned skin (SFX, film, theatre)
- Windburn and cold exposure (winter survival looks)
- Broken capillaries and skin flushing
- Outdoor characters: soldiers, sailors, mountaineers, survivors
- Application over latex, silicone, gelatine or wax prosthetics
