What is an alcohol activated SFX palette?

Alcohol activated make-up is not activated with water but with cosmetic alcohol or a dedicated activator like EBA Fuel. This means it also adheres to materials that water-based face paint slides straight off: foam latex, silicone, gelatine and fabric. Once applied it is waterproof, transfer-resistant and stays put for hours, even under heavy film lighting or warm studio conditions.

Who is this palette for?

This palette is aimed at SFX artists and hobbyists stepping up who want to create serious zombie make-up: realistic decaying skin, veining, yellowed discolouration and blood in one complete set. It replaces a stack of individual colours and carries enough product for hundreds of looks.

New to alcohol activated make-up? Start with thin washes and build slowly. The pigments are strong, so less is more.

What colours are in this palette?

The 10 colours are built around three functions: zombie skin tones as a base (3 shades for pale and lifeless undertones), decay and effect colours (4 for nicotine staining, veining, bruising and yellow-green rot) and blood and shading (3 for fresh and dried blood and deep shadows). Use them individually or layer them together.

How to use it

Activate the make-up with EBA Fuel Spray or 99.9% isopropyl alcohol on a round brush or stipple brush. Work in thin washes and build the look layer by layer. The make-up dries within seconds and is then waterproof.

Pro tip: Start with PALE DEAD as a base across the whole face. Work NIGHT SWAMP and DIRTY BROWN in thin washes across cheeks and jaw lines for a rotting texture. Stipple NICOTINE STAIN onto lip edges and skin folds. Map out veining with VEIN TONE and PRIME BLUE. Finish with AGED BLOOD or FRESH BLOOD in wounds and PRIME BLACK for deep shadows in eye sockets and cavities.

Skin safety and skin prep

The Encore formula uses cosmetic alcohol and FDA-compliant pigments. If you have sensitive skin, test on a small area in the crook of your elbow first. Avoid applying to broken skin, the mucous membranes of the eyes and lips.

For extra adhesion and smudge resistance, apply a thin layer of EBA ProSeal Spray or EBA H2O Seal before or after application.

Setting and removing

Alcohol activated make-up is intrinsically waterproof once dry, so no additional fixative is needed. For removal at the end of the day you will need a dedicated remover. Water and soap alone will not do the job.
