What is an alcohol activated SFX palette?
Alcohol activated make-up is activated not with water but with cosmetic alcohol or a dedicated activator like EBA Fuel. That means it adheres to surfaces where water-based face paint simply slides off: foam latex, silicone, gelatine and fabric. Once applied, the make-up is waterproof, transfer-resistant and stays put for hours - even under heavy film lighting or warm studio conditions.
Who is this palette for?
This palette is aimed at SFX artists, make-up designers and prosthetics specialists who regularly work with medium-to-dark skin tones. Film and TV productions, theatre companies and cosplayers will find it the foundation for colour-accurate work on darker skin and over silicone or foam latex prosthetics. It replaces a whole row of individual shades and holds up for hundreds of looks.
New to alcohol activated make-up? Start with thin washes - a wash is a diluted, translucent layer - and build up slowly. The pigments are strong, so less is more.
What colours are in this palette?
The 10 colours are built around two functions: dark skin tones as a base (6 shades, three cool C-tones and three warm W-tones for the starting layer) and adjusters for colour correction (4 shades for tattoo cover, scars, veins and sunburn effects). Use them individually or combined.
- C 4 - cool medium-dark skin tone for base layer
- C 5 - cool deep skin tone for a darker ground shade
- C 6 - cool very deep skin tone for the darkest base
- W 5 - warm medium-dark skin tone with olive undertone
- W 8 - warm deep skin tone for a richer ground shade
- W 9 - warm very deep skin tone for the warmest base
- Rust Yellow - adjuster for camouflaging bluish undertones and tattoos
- Deep Blue - adjuster for vein details and cool discolouration
- Rust Red - adjuster for sunburn effects and red undertones
- Burnt Sienna - warm brown-red adjuster for contouring and shadows
How to use it
Activate the make-up with EBA Fuel Spray or 99.9% isopropyl alcohol on a round brush or stipple brush. Work in thin washes - thin layers build more depth than one thick coat. The make-up dries within seconds and is then waterproof.
Pro tip: Start with C 5 or W 8 as a ground layer on the prosthetic or skin. Mix C 6 and Burnt Sienna on the white mixing surface for shadows in cavities. Cover tattoos by laying down Rust Yellow as a neutralising layer first, then apply W 5 or W 9 over the top - that covers blue-black ink with minimal product.
Skin safety and skin prep
The Encore formula is made with cosmetic alcohol and FDA-compliant pigments. For sensitive skin: patch test on a small area in the crook of your elbow first. Avoid application on broken skin, eye mucous membranes and lips.
For extra adhesion and protection against rubbing off, apply a thin layer of EBA ProSeal Spray or EBA H2O Seal before or after application.
Setting and removing
Alcohol activated make-up is intrinsically waterproof once dry - no additional setting product needed. To remove it at the end of the day, use a dedicated remover. Water and soap alone won't do the job.
- EBA Unveil - alcohol-free, hydrating remover for sensitive skin and the face
- EBA Vapore - alcohol-based remover for fast full removal, including from prosthetics
- Mouldlife Life-Wipes - make-up remover wipes that also remove skin adhesives such as Pros-Aide (Mouldlife product, not EBA)
What can you use it for?
- Film, TV and professional SFX make-up with dark skin tones
- Theatre and stage productions with long performance runs
- Prosthetic work on foam latex and silicone prosthetics
- Tattoo camouflage and scar cover on darker skin
- Colour correction and skin tone matching for on-set continuity
- Cosplay and character transformations with realistic skin tone
- Halloween and horror looks where you want to go beyond standard face paint
