What is an alcohol activated SFX palette?
Alcohol activated make-up is not activated with water but with cosmetic alcohol or a dedicated activator like EBA Fuel. That means it adheres to surfaces where water-based face paint simply slides off: foam latex, silicone, gelatine and fabric. Once applied, the make-up is waterproof, transfer-resistant and stays put for hours - even under heavy film lighting or warm studio conditions.
Who is this palette for?
This palette is built for SFX artists and make-up designers working in film, TV, theatre or haunt events where injury and trauma make-up is central. The combination of blood tones, bruise colours and skin discolouration replaces a stack of individual products. It will take you through hundreds of looks.
New to alcohol activated make-up? Start with thin washes and build up slowly - the pigments are strong, so less is more. Expect a few evenings of practice before you get the results you have in mind. This palette is designed for trauma, wound and blood effects. Not suitable for children's face painting at parties - for lighter Halloween looks see the Encore SFX palette.
What colours are in this palette?
The 10 colours are built around three functions: base white and skin refinement (2 shades for light layers and highlights), blood stages and wound colours (4 colours from fresh to dried), and bruising and vascular tones (4 shades for contusions, veins and skin discolouration). Use them individually or layer them together.
- Prime White - pure white base for highlights and lightening
- Nicotine Stain - yellow-brown discolouration for skin folds and wound edges
- Fresh Blood - bright red for fresh wounds and blood traces
- Vein Blood - dark venous red for deeper wounds
- Bruise Red - warm red for early-stage contusions
- Dried Blood - dark brown-red for dried and aged blood
- Mauve - soft mauve-pink for healing bruises
- Prime Blue - cool blue for vascular areas and deep bruising
- Bruise Purple - deep purple for severe contusions and ageing bruises
- Prime Black - deep black for shadows in wounds and cavities
How to use it
Activate the make-up with EBA Fuel Spray or 99.9% isopropyl alcohol on a round brush or stipple brush. Work in thin washes - thin layers build more depth than one thick application. The make-up dries within seconds and is then waterproof.
Pro tip: Start with Bruise Red as a warm base across the contusion area. Layer Mauve and Bruise Purple in overlapping washes for the typical colour shift of a bruise. Add Prime Blue along wound edges and veins. Work Dried Blood into the wound centre and finish with Prime Black for the deepest shadows.
Skin safety and skin prep
The Encore formula uses cosmetic-grade alcohol and FDA-compliant pigments. For sensitive skin: patch test on a small area in the crook of the elbow first. Avoid application on broken skin, eye mucous membranes and lips.
For extra adhesion and protection against transfer, apply a thin layer of EBA ProSeal Spray or EBA H2O Seal before or after.
Setting and removing
Alcohol activated make-up is intrinsically waterproof once dry - no additional fixative needed. For removal at the end of the day you will need a dedicated remover. Water and soap alone will not do the job.
- EBA Unveil - alcohol-free, hydrating remover for sensitive skin and the face
- EBA Vapore - alcohol-based remover for fast complete removal, including prosthetics
- Mouldlife Life-Wipes - make-up remover wipes that also remove skin adhesives such as Pros-Aide
What can you use it for?
- Film, TV and professional SFX make-up
- Theatre and stage productions with long run times
- Prosthetic work on foam latex and silicone
- Trauma simulations for medical training and emergency exercises
- Realistic wounds, bruises and blood effects on prosthetics
- Cosplay and character transformations with injury detail
- Halloween and horror looks where you want to go beyond standard face paint
