What is an alcohol activated SFX palette?

Alcohol activated make-up is activated not with water, but with cosmetic alcohol or a dedicated activator like EBA Fuel. This means the palette adheres to materials that water-based face paint slides straight off: foam latex, silicone, gelatine and fabric. Once applied, the make-up is waterproof, transfer-resistant and stays put for hours - even under heavy film lighting or warm studio conditions.

This palette is made for SFX artists, make-up designers and prosthetics specialists working on dark to very dark skin tones. It replaces separate pots and carries through hundreds of looks - from subtle skin correction to full prosthetic colouring. New to alcohol activated make-up? Start with thin washes - a wash is a diluted, translucent layer - and build up gradually. The pigments are strong, so less is more.

What colours are in this palette?

The 10 colours are built around two functions: deep skin tones as a base (6 shades for the starting layer on darker complexions) and adjusters for correction and depth (4 shades for colour balance, shadow and finishing). Use them individually or combined.

• N8 - neutral deep skin tone, ideal starting layer
• N10 - neutral very deep tone for rich base build-up
• N12 - deepest neutral shade for the darkest complexions
• W10 - warm deep tone for golden undertones
• W11 - warm deep brown for added warmth in the skin
• W12 - deepest warm shade for intense warmth and glow
• C9 - cool shade for blue-grey undertones
• C10 - cool deep tone for adjusting blue-cool complexions

How to use it

Activate the make-up with EBA Fuel Spray or 99.9% isopropyl alcohol on a round brush. Work in thin washes - thin layers give more depth and control than one thick coat. The make-up dries within seconds and is then waterproof.

Pro tip: Start with N10 or N12 as an even base layer on the prosthetic or skin. Blend W11 onto the cheeks and forehead for warmth. Add C11 or C12 into the hollows around the eyes, nose and chin for depth and dimension. Finish with a thin wash of W12 on the high planes for a true-to-life glow.

Skin safety and skin prep

The Encore formula is made with cosmetic alcohol and FDA-compliant pigments. On sensitive skin: patch test on the inner elbow first. Avoid application on broken skin, eye mucous membranes and lips.

For extra adhesion and protection against transfer, apply a thin coat of EBA ProSeal Spray or EBA H2O Seal before or after application.

Setting and removing

Alcohol activated make-up is intrinsically waterproof once dry - no extra fixative needed. To remove at the end of the day, you'll need a dedicated remover. Water and soap alone won't do it.
