What is an alcohol activated SFX palette?

Alcohol activated make-up is not activated with water but with cosmetic alcohol or a dedicated activator like EBA Fuel. That means it adheres to surfaces where water-based face paint slides straight off: foam latex, silicone, gelatine and fabric. Once applied it is waterproof, transfer-resistant and stays put for hours, even under hot film lights or heavy physical exertion.

Who is this palette for?

This palette is made for professional SFX artists in the haunt and horror industry: haunted house make-up artists, film and theatre teams, and anyone building long-wear horror looks on skin and prosthetics. The format also suits advanced hobbyists moving on from standard Halloween paints and ready to step into alcohol-activated work.

New to alcohol activated make-up? Start with thin washes and build gradually. The pigments are strong, so less is more. This palette is aimed at haunt FX and heavy horror looks. Not intended for children's face painting at parties - for milder theme make-up see the Encore SFX.

What colours are in this palette?

The 10 colours are built around three functions: base skin tones (3 colours for the foundation layer and dead or sickly skin), decay and effect colours (4 colours for organic rot, injuries and blood) and shading and bruising (3 for depth, contusions and grime). Use them individually or layered.

• Prime White - pure white base for highlights and fine details
• Pale Dead - lifeless pale skin tone as a starting layer
• Nicotine Stain - yellow-brown discolouration for aged skin and creases
• Bile - yellow-green tint for a sickly, rotting appearance
• Spleen - deep green for shadows and rotting effects
• Rancid - gradually decaying skin tone for organic rot
• Aged Blood - dark congealed blood for old wounds
• Liver - deep red-purple for internal injuries and organ tones
• Contusion - bruise colour for realistic contusions
• Dirty Brown - grime tone for dirt, weathering and old scarring

How to use it

Activate the make-up with EBA Fuel Spray or 99.9% isopropyl alcohol on a stipple brush or round brush. Work in thin washes. Thin layers build more depth and realism than a single heavy coat. The make-up dries within seconds and is then waterproof.

Pro tip: Start with Pale Dead as a skin base across the face or prosthetic. Wash Bile and Rancid over the cheeks and around the mouth for organic decay. Stipple Contusion across the jaw and eye socket for bruising depth. Finish with Aged Blood and Liver inside wounds and hollows for layered, convincing blood.

Skin safety and skin prep

The Encore formula is made with cosmetic alcohol and FDA-compliant pigments. On sensitive skin: test on a small patch inside the elbow first. Avoid applying to broken skin, eye mucosa and lips.

For extra adhesion and rub-off protection, apply a thin layer of EBA ProSeal Spray or EBA H2O Seal before or after application.

Setting and removing

Alcohol activated make-up is intrinsically waterproof once dry, no additional fixative needed. To remove at the end of the day you need a dedicated remover. Water and soap alone will not do the job.

10 alcohol-activated colours in EBA's signature magnetic refillable case with a white mixing surface in the lid. Colour pans are individually replaceable, so you do not need to discard the entire palette when one colour runs out. Each pan is 38x38mm (1.5x1.5 inch) and holds 3.5g. FDA-compliant ingredients, made in Costa Mesa (California, USA), not tested on animals.

Activate with EBA Fuel Spray 120ml (the official EBA activator, fine mist) or the smaller EBA Fuel 30ml for on the go.
