What is an alcohol activated SFX palette?

Alcohol activated make-up is not activated with water but with cosmetic alcohol or a dedicated activator like EBA Fuel. That means it adheres to surfaces where water-based face paint simply slides off: foam latex, silicone, gelatine and fabric. Once applied, the make-up is waterproof, transfer-resistant and stays put for hours, even under hot studio lighting or warm stage conditions.

Who is this palette for?

This palette is made for professional SFX artists, make-up designers and character artists working in film, TV or theatre. It also suits the advanced hobbyist who is stepping into prosthetic work and wants a palette that holds up across hundreds of looks. The magnetic refillable case lets you replace individual pans when they run out, without replacing the whole palette.

New to alcohol activated make-up? Start with thin washes (a wash is a diluted, semi-transparent layer) and build up gradually. The pigments are strong, so less is more.

What colours are in this palette?

The 10 colours are built around three functions: skin tone bases (4 shades for the foundation layer on skin or prosthetic), ageing and effect colours (4 for discolouration, vein detail and weathering) and shading (2 for depth and contrast in wrinkles and hollows). Use them individually or combine them freely.

• Prime White - pure white base for highlights and light build-up
• W1 - warm light skin tone for base layer
• C5 - deep cool skin tone
• C6 - very deep cool skin tone
• Nicotine Stain - yellow-brown discolouration for lip edges and skin folds
• Vein Tone - blue-green shade for realistic veins
• Teal Blue - cool blue for subtle shadows and vein areas
• Rose - soft pink for subtle skin undertones
• Dirty Brown - smear tone for grime and weathering effects
• Prime Black - deep black for shadows in wrinkles and hollows

How to use it

Activate the make-up with EBA Fuel Spray or 99.9% isopropyl alcohol on a round brush or stipple brush. Work in thin washes: thin layers give far more depth than one thick application. The make-up dries within seconds and is then waterproof.

Pro tip: Start with W1 or C5 as a base on the prosthetic. Work Vein Tone and Teal Blue in thin washes along the temples and eyelids. Stipple Nicotine Stain onto lip edges and skin folds. Finish with Prime Black for deep shadows in wrinkles and hollows.

Skin safety and skin prep

The Encore formula uses cosmetic-grade alcohol and FDA-compliant pigments. For sensitive skin: patch-test on the inside of the elbow first. Avoid applying to broken skin, eye mucous membranes and lips.

For extra adhesion and protection against transfer, apply a thin layer of EBA ProSeal Spray or EBA H2O Seal before or after application.

Setting and removing

Alcohol activated make-up is intrinsically waterproof once dry, no extra fixative needed. To remove it at the end of the day you will need a dedicated remover. Water and soap alone will not do the job.

10 alcohol-activated colours in EBA's signature magnetic refillable case with white mixing surface in the lid. Pans are individually replaceable, so you do not need to replace the whole palette when one colour runs out. Each pan is 38x38mm (1.5x1.5 inch) and contains 3.5g. FDA-compliant ingredients, made in Costa Mesa (California, USA), not tested on animals.
