What is an alcohol activated SFX palette?

Alcohol activated make-up is not activated with water but with cosmetic alcohol or a dedicated activator such as EBA Fuel. This means it adheres to materials where face paint simply slides off: foam latex, silicone, gelatine and fabric. Once applied, the make-up is waterproof, transfer-resistant and stays put for hours - even under heavy film lighting or warm studio conditions.

Who is this palette for?

This palette is built for professional SFX and film make-up artists working on undead and horror characters, and for advanced hobbyists moving into prosthetic work or who want to use alcohol activated make-up for Halloween and cosplay. It replaces a collection of individual colours and holds up for hundreds of looks.

New to alcohol activated make-up? Start with thin washes and build up gradually. The pigments are strong, so less is more.

What colours are in this palette?

The 10 colours are built around three functions: pale and dead skin tones as a base (3 shades for the foundation layer), venous and vascular discolouration (3 colours for vasculature and undead detailing) and shading and depth (4 colours for dark accents, grime and bruising). Use them individually or combine freely.

How to use it

Activate the make-up with EBA Fuel Spray or 99.9% isopropyl alcohol on a round brush or stipple brush. Work in thin washes and build layer by layer. The make-up dries within seconds and is then waterproof.

Pro tip: Start with PALE DEAD as an overall base layer across the face or prosthetic. Work VEIN TONE and VEIN BLOOD in thin washes along the temples, eyelids and jawline. Add NIGHT SWAMP to sunken cheeks and hollows. Stipple NICOTINE STAIN onto lip edges and skin folds, then finish with CHARCOAL for the deepest shadows.

Skin safety and skin prep

The Encore formula uses cosmetic-grade alcohol and FDA-compliant pigments. If you have sensitive skin: patch test on a small area in the crook of your elbow first. Avoid applying to broken skin, eye mucous membranes and lips.

For extra adhesion and protection against rubbing off, apply a thin layer of EBA ProSeal Spray or EBA H2O Seal before or after application.

Setting and removing

Alcohol activated make-up is intrinsically waterproof once dry - no additional fixative needed. To remove at the end of the day you will need a dedicated remover. Water and soap alone will not do the job.
