What is an alcohol activated SFX palette?

Alcohol activated make-up is not activated with water but with cosmetic alcohol or a dedicated activator like EBA Fuel. This means it adheres to surfaces where water-based face paint simply slides off: foam latex, silicone, gelatine and fabric. Once applied, the make-up is waterproof, transfer-resistant and stays put for hours - even under heavy film lighting or warm studio conditions.

Who is this palette for?

This palette is built for film, TV and theatre professionals who need to match skin tones across a wide range of performers. The ten colours - split across neutral, warm and cool undertones - give you enough range to mix a realistic base for virtually any actor or extra, including prosthetics. It replaces a set of individual pots and carries through hundreds of looks.

New to alcohol activated make-up? Start with thin washes (a wash is a diluted, translucent layer) and build up gradually. The pigments are strong, so less is more.

What colours are in this palette?

The 10 colours are organised around two functions: skin tone bases (9 shades across neutral, warm W-tones and cool C-tones for the foundation layer and build-up) and a neutral adjuster (1 shade that also works as a concealer or colour mixer). Use them individually or blend them together.

How to use it

Activate the make-up with EBA Fuel Spray or 99.9% isopropyl alcohol on a round brush or stipple brush. Work in thin washes - thin layers build more depth and realism than a single heavy application. The make-up dries within seconds and is then waterproof.

Pro tip: Start with N1 as a neutral base to even out the tone of a prosthetic or bare skin. Add W1 or W2 for warm, sun-kissed tones; use C2 or C4 for cooler, rosier or northern European undertones. For deeper skin tones, layer W9 or C6 in thin washes until you hit the right saturation.

Skin safety and skin prep

The Encore formula uses cosmetic-grade alcohol and FDA-compliant pigments. If you have sensitive skin: patch test on a small area inside your elbow first. Avoid applying to broken skin, eye mucosa and lips.

For extra adhesion and rub-off protection, apply a thin layer of EBA ProSeal Spray or EBA H2O Seal before or after application.

Setting and removing

Alcohol activated make-up is intrinsically waterproof once dry - no extra fixative needed. To remove at the end of the day, you need a dedicated remover. Water and soap alone will not do the job.
