Ben Nye Blood Effects Gel, 29 ml
Ben Nye Blood Effects Gel is a deep-red gelatin gel by Ben Nye for built-up 3D blood effects in SFX, theatre and film. Warm the bottle in a hot water bath until the gel becomes liquid. Apply with a spatula and sculpt the texture as it cools. Once set, you have a smear-proof and transfer-proof 3D blood effect. No skin adhesive needed: the gelatin bonds directly to the skin. The 29 ml bottle is the entry-level size for SFX work, theatre and haunted houses.

What is Ben Nye Blood Effects Gel?
Blood Effects Gel is a gelatin gel based on glycerine, gelatin and water. The red pigments (Red 40 and Blue 1) give it a deep, realistic blood colour. Unlike liquid blood such as Stage Blood or cold-application gels like Thick Blood, this lets you build real 3D structures. You can raise wound edges, mimic congealed blood or add bloody character details that hold their shape even on camera.
The Effects Gel range has three colours sharing the same gelatin base: Blood (deep red), Flesh Effects Gel (yellowish-transparent) and Scar Effects Gel (opaque skin colour). Want all three at once? Go for the Effects Gel Wound Kit 3 x 29 ml.
Why choose Blood Effects Gel?
Liquid blood runs. Blood Effects Gel does not. Once cooled, the 3D structure stays put: raised wound edges, congealed blood droplets, bloody character details. On camera it looks exactly like real congealed blood. Smear-proof and transfer-proof, even in warm conditions or under bright studio lighting.
Choose Blood Effects Gel when you need visible depth and texture that liquid blood cannot deliver. For a complete wound build-up, combine it with Flesh Effects Gel for skin texture and Scar Effects Gel for raised scar edges. Blood goes on as the final layer.
How to use Ben Nye Blood Effects Gel
Place the bottle in hot water (bain-marie or hot water bath) until the gelatin is liquid. Work quickly before the gel sets.
- Direct on skin: apply the liquid gel with a spatula. Sculpt the texture as it cools.
- Pre-made appliances: pour the liquid gel into a mould, allow to cool, release with a dusting of setting powder and store for later. To apply, use fresh warmed gel or Ben Nye Spirit Gum to bond the appliance to the skin.
- Combining with liquid blood: apply Blood Effects Gel as a congealed base, then drizzle Stage Blood over it for a fresh, glistening wet look.
Pro tip: Tint the cooled gel with creme make-up or Magicake aquacolor for extra wound detail. Take the shine off with a light dusting of Neutral Set Powder and a large brush to reduce gloss and tackiness. Work in thin layers for sharp definition; build depth by adding extra layers in specific areas.
Setting and removal
Blood Effects Gel sets on its own, so no fixative is needed. For removal, work through these steps:
- Skin: place a hot damp towel over the effect and leave for 30 to 60 seconds so the gelatin melts. Wipe away with a Wonder Towel; finish with a skin cleanser.
- Pre-made appliances with Spirit Gum: dissolve the Spirit Gum with Ben Nye Bond Off; any remaining gelatin rinses away with warm water.
- Clothing and fabric: rinse immediately with cold water. Wash at 30 degrees Celsius with a stain remover. Test on a hidden area first.
