Ben Nye Fresh Scab, 170 g

Ben Nye Fresh Scab is a brown-red scab gel from Ben Nye for dried-blood and healing wound effects in theatre, film and SFX. The gel has an oxidised, dark brown-red colour that mimics blood beginning to dry and crust over. Its gel consistency holds its shape after application without spreading. Ideal for dried scab looks, healed wounds and blood crust effects. This 170 g size is the pro format for longer productions, SFX training sessions and haunted houses.

  • Brown-red oxidised scab gel, mimics dried blood
  • Gel consistency holds shape, no runs
  • Formula: Karo Syrup, Silica as gel thickener, Phenoxyethanol as preservative
  • Comfortable for small targeted mouth-area effects
  • Removes from skin with warm water and soap; test on fabric first

What is Ben Nye Fresh Scab?

Fresh Scab is the scab gel in the Ben Nye blood effects range. Where standard fake blood is red and liquid, Fresh Scab has a darker, browner tone that mimics the oxidation process of drying blood. The result is a more convincing crust or dried wound rather than a fresh, wet bleed.

Fresh Scab and Thick Blood make up the gel branch of the Ben Nye blood effects line. Use Thick Blood for fresh red gel wounds; use Fresh Scab when blood should look partially dried or when you want to suggest a healing wound. The two products complement each other directly.

Why do pros choose Fresh Scab?

The gel consistency is the key feature. Fresh Scab does not run, seep or spread the way liquid fake blood does. You can place it exactly where you want it and it stays there. That makes it suitable for character work where precision matters, such as healing abrasions, old stab wounds or blood beneath a crust.

For fresh red open wounds, choose Thick Blood or the liquid option Stage Blood. Fresh Scab is the right choice when blood needs to look several hours old. That colour differentiation between the two gels makes a real difference to the believability of a look.

How to use Ben Nye Fresh Scab

Apply the gel with a stipple sponge or spatula, straight from the pot. Avoid using a brush; the gel is too thick and a brush pulls it out of position.

  • Dried blood crust: Apply a layer of Fresh Scab over the wound, press lightly with a spatula and leave the texture irregular. The brown tone sells the scab look immediately.
  • Healing wound with residual staining: Work the gel in thin layers around the edges of a prosthetic or wax wound. Combine with Thick Blood at the centre for depth: red at the core, brown at the outer edge.
  • Older character work: Use Fresh Scab on scratches and old injuries for zombie or cadaver looks. The oxidised colour suits dead tissue far better than bright red blood.

Combine Fresh Scab with Dark Blood for extra depth in dark wounds, or with Thick Blood for a wound that looks both fresh and partly dried.

Setting and removal

Fresh Scab holds its gel shape without any setting spray. The gel does not fully dry and requires no fixative. To remove, work through these steps:

  • Skin: Warm water with mild soap, dabbing to remove. For stubborn residue use a Wonder Towel; finish with a good skin cleanser. On lighter skin a faint brownish tint may remain briefly and fade within a few hours.
  • Clothing and fabric: Rinse immediately with cold water. Then wash at 30 degrees Celsius with a stain remover. Test on a hidden area first. Ben Nye states it washes out of most fabrics but gives no 100 per cent guarantee.
  • Latex and silicone prosthetics: Warm water with soap is sufficient. For stubborn residue in deep cavities, dab carefully with a Wonder Towel.

What can you use it for?

  • Dried blood crust effects on face and body
  • Healed or partially healed wounds in character work
  • Zombie, undead and cadaver looks with older injuries
  • Detail work on and around latex and silicone prosthetics
  • SFX training sessions requiring extended working time (pro format)
  • Haunted house and Halloween productions with multiple performers
