Ben Nye Thick Blood is an arterial red blood gel from Ben Nye for raised wound effects and SFX work. The gelatinous consistency holds its shape and stays workable during application. That means the blood sits visually inside the wound instead of running away. Suitable for abrasions, prosthetic fills, and open gore effects. The 28 g jar is the entry-size format, handy for kits and individual character builds.

What is Ben Nye Thick Blood?

Ben Nye Thick Blood is a gel blood product based on hydrolysed corn starch and silica. The formula is intentionally thick. Where Stage Blood and Dark Blood flow across the skin, Thick Blood stays exactly where you place it.

Thick Blood belongs to the gel side of the Ben Nye blood family, alongside Fresh Scab. The difference: Thick Blood has the arterial red colour of a fresh open wound. Fresh Scab has the brown-red, oxidised tone of dried blood.

Why do pros choose Thick Blood?

The gel consistency lets you place blood literally inside a wound. For prosthetic fills, deeper cut effects, or detailed road rash looks, you need a product that stays put while you work. Thick Blood gives you time and control.

Choose Thick Blood when you want to build a wound with volume and 3D texture. For running blood or wet drips, Stage Blood or Dark Blood is the better choice. Combine both in the same wound for maximum depth.

How to use Ben Nye Thick Blood

Apply the gel straight from the jar. No water is needed to activate it.

• Abrasions and road rash: Stipple the gel layer by layer using a stipple sponge. Small stippled dots create the raw texture of a graze wound.
• Open cuts and prosthetic fills: Apply with a palette knife and work the gel into the wound cavity. Thick Blood holds its shape during modelling.
• Gore combination effects: Blend Thick Blood directly in the wound with Fresh Scab for a fresh-plus-dried combination. Add a careful layer of Stage Blood on top for a wet, glossy finish.

The corn starch base is the same as Stage Blood. For small directed effects around the mouth corners, it is comfortable to use. For larger mouth areas, Stage Blood is the better option.

Setting and removal

Thick Blood holds its shape without additional setting. For removal, work in steps:

• Skin: Warm water with mild soap, pat away gently. For stubborn residue use a Wonder Towel. Finish with a skin soap. On fair skin a faint red shadow may remain for a few hours before fading completely.
• Clothing and fabric: Rinse immediately with cold water. Then wash at 30 degrees Celsius with a stain remover. Test on a hidden area first. Ben Nye states it washes from most fabrics, but gives no 100 per cent guarantee.
• Latex and silicone prosthetics: Warm water with soap is sufficient. For stubborn residue inside deep prosthetic cavities, pat gently with a Wonder Towel.
