Ben Nye Fresh Scab, 28 g
Ben Nye Fresh Scab is a brown-red scab gel by Ben Nye for dried wound effects in SFX and theatre. The gel has an oxidised colour that mimics a freshly dried blood crust. It holds its shape after application and does not run. The 28 g pot is the starter size, practical for kits and character work where you need a scab look.
- Brown-red oxidised colour for a dried blood crust look
- Gel consistency: holds shape, no liquid runs
- Karo Syrup + Phenoxyethanol, gel thickener; paraben-free
- Comfortable for small targeted mouth-area effects
- Removes from skin with warm water and soap; test on fabric first
What is Ben Nye Fresh Scab?
Ben Nye Fresh Scab is an SFX gel that mimics the colour and texture of a dried wound. The brown-red tone replicates oxidised blood, exactly as a real scab looks after some time. It shares the same gel base as Thick Blood, but with a darker, dried colour instead of fresh arterial red.
Fresh Scab and Thick Blood form the gel branch of the Ben Nye stage blood range. Use Thick Blood for fresh open wounds and Fresh Scab when the wound has aged, or for character work where the injury is further along in the healing process.
Why do pros choose Fresh Scab?
The strength of Fresh Scab lies in the combination of colour and texture. A flat brown face paint gives a two-dimensional result. The gel structure adds a slight three-dimensional presence on the skin, convincing the eye that something is happening underneath.
Choose Fresh Scab when you want to show multiple stages of a wound: combine Thick Blood for the wet, fresh zone and Fresh Scab along the edges where the blood is drying. That gives you a layered wound look with minimal products.
How to use Ben Nye Fresh Scab
Apply the gel with a small palette knife or silicone tip. Work from the inside out: start at the centre of the wound and blend the scab layer towards the edges. Brush application is not recommended, as the gel sticks to brush bristles.
- Standalone scab: press a small amount of gel directly onto the skin and lightly pat with a stipple sponge for a rougher crust texture.
- Combined with Thick Blood: apply Thick Blood first in the wound centre for the wet look, then add Fresh Scab along the edges for the dried-out effect.
- Character work: use Fresh Scab as a layer over dried latex or wax wounds to suggest healing skin; the gel colour blends better with skin tones than fresh red blood.
The gel does not need to be set. It stays stable on skin as long as you do not actively rub it.
Setting and removal
Fresh Scab holds its shape without a setting spray or powder. For removal, work through these steps:
- Skin: warm water with mild soap, dabbing outwards. For stubborn residue use a Wonder Towel; finish with a gentle skin soap. On lighter skin tones a faint red shadow may linger for a few hours before fading completely.
- Clothing and fabric: rinse immediately with cold water. Then machine wash at 30 degrees Celsius with a stain remover. Test on a hidden area first. Ben Nye states the product washes out of most fabrics, but gives no 100 per cent guarantee.
- Latex and silicone prosthetics: warm water with soap is sufficient. For stubborn residue in deep prosthetic cavities, dab carefully with a Wonder Towel.
