Ben Nye Thick Blood, 190 gr

Ben Nye Thick Blood is an arterial red blood gel by Ben Nye for raised wound effects in theatre, film and SFX. The gelatinous consistency means it stays exactly where you place it without running or spreading. It holds its shape and remains workable throughout application. Suitable for abrasions, road rash, prosthesis fills and open gore wounds. The 190 gr pro-size is intended for longer productions, SFX training sessions and haunted houses.

  • Arterial red blood gel with gelatinous consistency
  • Holds its shape, stays workable, no liquid runs
  • Hydrolyzed Corn Starch and silica base, phenoxyethanol as preservative
  • Same corn-starch base as Stage Blood; comfortable for small targeted mouth-area effects
  • Washes from skin with warm water and soap; test on fabric first

What is Ben Nye Thick Blood?

Thick Blood is the gel variant from the Ben Nye blood family. Where Stage Blood and Dark Blood stay liquid, Thick Blood gives you a viscous gel you can model and build up. That makes it work as both a wound filler and an abrasion effect.

Thick Blood belongs alongside Fresh Scab in the gel branch of the Ben Nye blood range. Fresh Scab gives you the brown-red oxidised look of a dried wound; Thick Blood gives you the fresh, glossy, wet effect. Use them together for wounds with multiple stages of healing.

Why do pros choose Thick Blood?

Choose Thick Blood when you need raised wound effects where the blood sits visually inside the wound and doesn't bleed into the surrounding make-up or prosthesis. The gel stays put, even after several minutes on set, which cuts down on touch-ups between takes or scenes.

Choose this 190 gr pro-size when working with a group, running a longer production or delivering an SFX training. For a single effect or a personal kit, the 28 gr size Ben Nye Thick Blood 28 gr is the more practical choice. If you need blood that flows and drips, use Stage Blood or Dark Blood instead.

How to use Ben Nye Thick Blood

Scoop the gel with a palette knife or work directly from the pot. The gel is workable straight from cold storage; no heating required.

  • Abrasions and road rash: stipple the gel onto the skin using a stipple sponge. The sponge texture creates the raw, irregular surface of a real graze.
  • Open cuts and prosthesis fills: apply the gel with a palette knife into the wound or prosthesis cavity. Its consistency stops it flowing away, letting you build depth and texture precisely.
  • Gore wound FX and layered effects: mix Thick Blood with Fresh Scab for a wound that has both fresh and dried layers. Thick wet blood over a scab layer immediately adds believable depth.

For combination effects in larger productions, use Thick Blood alongside liquid blood. Apply Thick Blood as the congealed core, then Stage Blood or Dark Blood at the edges for the flowing element.

Setting and removal

Thick Blood holds its shape without any fixative. For removal, work through these steps:

  • Skin: warm water with mild soap, patting it away gently. For stubborn residue use a Wonder Towel; finish with a skin-safe soap. On fair skin, a faint red shadow may linger but will fade within a few hours.
  • Clothing and fabric: rinse immediately with cold water, then machine wash at 30 degrees Celsius with a stain remover. Always test on a hidden area first. Ben Nye states it washes out of most fabrics but does not give a 100 per cent guarantee.
  • Latex and silicone prostheses: warm water and soap is sufficient. For stubborn residue in deep prosthesis cavities, work with a Wonder Towel using a patting motion.

What can you use it for?

  • Abrasions and road rash effects on skin
  • Fresh open cuts and gaping wound FX
  • Prosthesis fills and raised blood effects on latex or silicone
  • Gore wound construction in film, theatre and haunted houses
  • SFX training sessions and large group productions
  • Multi-stage wounds in combination with Fresh Scab
