What is Ben Nye Flesh Effects Gel?

Flesh Effects Gel is a gelatine gel from Ben Nye Makeup Los Angeles for creating raised 3D skin effects. You heat it until liquid, mould the shape you need, and it holds firm once cooled. Unlike liquid stage blood, this stays put as a raised texture on the skin.

How to use Ben Nye Flesh Effects Gel

Place the bottle in hot water (a bain-marie or hot water bath) until the gelatine is fully liquid. Work quickly before it cools and sets.

• Direct on skin: apply the liquid gel with a spatula. Shape the texture as it cools, pulling cut edges open or pressing grazes flat.
• Pre-made appliances: pour the liquid gel into a mould, leave to cool, release with a dusting of setting powder and store for later. To apply, use fresh heated gel or Ben Nye Spirit Gum to bond the appliance to skin.
• Colouring after application: once the gel has set, add detail to wound edges with cream make-up for depth and colour without remelting the gelatine.

Pro tip: Colour the cooled gel with cream make-up or Magicake aquacolour for extra wound detail. Knock back the shine and tackiness with a light dusting of Neutral Set Powder using a large brush. Build in thin layers for crisp definition and add thickness only where you need depth.

Setting and removal

Flesh Effects Gel sets on its own, no fixative needed. To remove, follow these steps:

• From skin: lay a hot damp towel over the effect and leave for 30 to 60 seconds until the gelatine melts. Wipe away with a Wonder Towel and finish with a skin cleanser.
• Pre-made appliances with Spirit Gum: dissolve the Spirit Gum with Ben Nye Bond Off. Any remaining gelatine rinses away with warm water.
• Clothing and fabric: rinse immediately with cold water. Wash at 30 degrees Celsius with a stain remover. Test on a hidden area first.
