The Effects Gel Wound Kit is a complete SFX wound set on a gelatine base from Ben Nye Makeup Los Angeles. Each bottle contains a heat-activated gelatine gel that you warm until liquid, then model onto skin. Once cooled, the gel holds its shape firmly.

The kit includes all three colours from the Effects Gel range: Blood Effects Gel (deep red), Flesh Effects Gel (slightly yellow transparent) and Scar Effects Gel (opaque skin tone). This pro-size with 3 x 59 ml is the larger sibling of the Effects Gel Wound Kit 3 x 29 ml.

How to use Ben Nye Effects Gel Wound Kit

Warm the bottles one at a time au-bain-marie in hot water until the gelatine turns liquid. Work quickly once open, as the gel cools fast and becomes harder to model.

• Direct to skin: apply the liquid gel using a spatula. Shape the texture while it cools and sets into the desired form.
• Pre-made appliances: pour the liquid gel into a mould, allow to cool and release using setting powder. Store for later use; when applying, use freshly warmed gel or Ben Nye Spirit Gum to bond the appliance to skin.
• Complete wound build: layer in order for best results. Apply Flesh first as the base texture, model Scar for raised scar edges, then finish with Blood on top for the blood effect.

Pro tip: Tint the cooled gel with cream make-up or Magicake aquacolour for extra wound detail. Matt the effect down with a touch of Neutral Set Powder and a large powder brush to reduce the gelatine's natural shine and tackiness. Build in thin layers for sharp definition and add depth on specific areas with additional passes.

Setting and removal

The Effects Gel sets on its own as it cools, no fixative is needed. For removal, work in stages:

• Skin: lay a hot damp towel over the effect and leave for 30 to 60 seconds so the gelatine melts. Wipe away with a Wonder Towel and cleanse with a skin soap.
• Pre-made appliances with Spirit Gum: dissolve Spirit Gum with Ben Nye Bond Off. Any remaining gelatine rinses away with warm water.
• Clothing and fabric: rinse immediately with cold water. Wash at 30 degrees Celsius with a stain remover. Test on a hidden area first.
