What vampire and blood SFX looks can you create with Dark Crimson?
Dark Crimson is a deep crimson shade with a dark undertone. That's what sets it apart from bright reds - you get a heavier, older blood effect that works well for vampire make-up, deep wounds and bruises with a red core.
Think vampire bites on the neck, deep gash wounds for a horror film look, or as a shadow colour in a complex SFX wound alongside lighter reds like Bright Red or Fresh Cut.
When should you choose a single pot over a palette?
This single pot is the right choice if you already have a face paint kit and just need Dark Crimson as a top-up - for example, if you've run out of this shade or need extra for a longer production or event.
If you're new to SFX reds, the FX Palette or Creature Palette is a more practical starting point - Dark Crimson is included alongside other blood and wound shades.
How to use it
Activate with a lightly damp brush or sponge. The talc base absorbs water slightly slower than glycerin-based face paints, so use a touch more water for smooth application. It dries within seconds.
Pro tip: Apply Dark Crimson to the centre of a wound and blend outward with a lighter red like Bright Red. Then add a touch of Deep Bruise or Black & Blue along the wound edges for realistic discolouration.
Setting and removing
MagiCake holds for several hours without a fixative. For longer events or theatre productions, set it with Ben Nye Final Seal. Removal is easy with soap and water, or quicker with a make-up remover.
