What post-apocalyptic and grime looks can you create with Dirt?

Dirt is the core earth tone in the Grime FX range. Use it for anything that needs to look dusty, grimy or weathered: a post-apocalyptic survivor, a homeless character, or someone who's just crawled through the mud. The brown tone mimics real soil convincingly, without looking painted on.

It works just as well on clothing and props as on skin. Age a jacket, rough up a pair of trainers, or help blend prosthetics into the surrounding skin.

When would you choose Dirt over a brown face paint?

Choose Dirt when you want a layered, realistic dust or soil effect that doesn't look too heavy or too much like make-up. A brown face paint gives coverage, but Dirt gives texture and depth. That's exactly what you need for film sets, Halloween attractions and simulation training.

Pair it with other Grime FX shades like Ash or Plains Dust for a more nuanced, multi-layered effect.

How to use it

Dry: apply Dirt with a powder brush, sponge or stipple sponge. Pat or sweep it on for a light, dusty layer. Wet: use a slightly damp brush for stronger colour and better adhesion. You can also mix it with glycerine or Mehron Mixing Liquid for a genuinely muddy, wet look.

Pro tip: Build in layers. Start dry for a subtle dust effect, then add a wet layer on the darkest areas - knees, elbows, hands. It ends up looking like someone has genuinely been rolling around in the mud.

Setting and removing

Grime FX Dirt adheres well without a fixative. For longer hold on clothing or props, you can set it with a fixative spray. On skin, it rinses off easily with soap and water. On clothing, a quick shake or rinse is usually enough.
