What wild west and outback looks can you create with Plains Dust?
Plains Dust is the go-to shade for anything that looks like it has spent days out in the open wilderness. Think cowboy looks, weathered western costumes, film characters who have ridden through dry scrubland, or a space explorer with a layer of dust across their suit.
The colour also works well for simulation exercises where dust and dryness need to look convincing, such as fire brigade or disaster training scenarios set in an arid environment.
When do you choose Plains Dust over a schmink palette colour?
Choose this powder when you need a subtle, gritty dust layer over a large surface area, hair or clothing. A face paint gives colour on skin; this powder adds texture and a matte, dry finish across almost anything. No makeup base needed.
Choose Plains Dust if you need to cover a large area quickly, or if you want to layer a prairie and dust tone alongside other Ben Nye Grime FX colours like Stone or Coal.
How to use it
Dry method: use a powder brush, sponge or stipple sponge and press the powder directly onto skin, hair, clothing or prosthetics. This gives a light, airy dust layer. Wet method: dampen a brush lightly with water or Mehron Mixing Liquid and work the powder through. This delivers more intense colour with better adhesion, ideal for layered effects.
Pro tip: Start with a dry layer for the base dust, then switch to a lightly damp brush for depth on specific spots like joints, clothing seams or along the hairline. That gives you the most realistic result without over-saturating the surface.
Setting and removing
Dry-applied Grime FX powder does not need to be set. If you want the colour to last longer on skin, a fixative spray works well. On clothing and hair, a light mist of hairspray helps lock it in.
Removal is straightforward with water and soap. On clothing, shake off excess powder first before washing. If you applied the powder wet and it has adhered more firmly, a mild makeup remover will do the job.
