Which stone and statue looks can you create with Stone?
Stone is the go-to colour for anything that needs to look cold, grey and rocky. Statues coming to life, concrete zombies, gargoyles, characters partially turned to stone - this powder does the heavy lifting. It also works brilliantly for explosion or collapse scenes where characters need to look dusty and grey.
On clothing and props, Stone quickly adds a weathered, powdery layer that reads convincingly under theatre lights and on camera.
When does Stone work better than face paint?
Regular face paint gives flat colour. Stone gives texture. The fine powder particles settle into skin and fabric in a way that grey face paint simply can't replicate. Choose Stone when you want a realistic weathered or dusty finish that holds up in close-up shots.
It's especially practical when you need to cover large areas quickly - arms, hands, hair and costumes - without building up layers of paint.
How to use Stone
Dry method: dust Stone with a powder brush, sponge or stipple sponge for a subtle, powdery layer. This works quickly over large areas of clothing, hair and props. Damp method: pick up the powder with a slightly damp brush, or mix with a drop of water or Mehron Mixing Liquid for more intense colour and better adhesion on skin and prosthetics. Build up in thin layers for the most realistic result.
Pro tip: Apply a thin base layer of grey face paint on skin or latex first, then dust Stone dry on top. The powder texture adds depth and gives the statue effect a natural finish that face paint alone can't achieve.
Setting and removing
Grime FX powders adhere without a fixative. If you want to lock the effect in place or use it alongside latex and prosthetics, apply a light coat of fixative spray over the finished look. Removal is straightforward with soap and water, or use a gentle make-up remover for any stubborn residue on skin.
What can you use it for?
- Statue and gargoyle characters (theatre, film, cosplay)
- Concrete and explosion effects for film and TV
- Halloween looks: zombie, mummy, stone monster
- Collapse and disaster scenes for simulation training
- Giving props, costumes and prosthetics a weathered stone finish
