Which soot, dust and burn effects can you create with Coal?

Coal is the darkest shade in the Grime FX range and works well for fire and explosion scenes, chimney sweep or miner looks, and anything involving soot or charcoal. It adds depth to dirt effects, especially when layered with lighter Grime FX shades like Plains Dust or Stone.

It also adheres well to prosthetics and latex effects, making it popular on film sets and at Halloween attractions where a convincing burnt look needs to come together quickly.

When do you choose Coal over a liquid burn effect?

Liquid products often leave a wet, shiny finish. Coal stays matte and dusty, just like real soot looks. Choose Coal when you want a dry, realistic dirty look without any sheen.

It's also a practical choice when you need to cover a large area quickly, or when working on costumes and props you don't want to get wet. The powder sits well on fabric without pulling or staining permanently.

How to use Coal

Dry: dust or sweep Coal on with a powder brush or sponge for a quick, subtle layer of grime. Wet: use a lightly damp brush, or mix with water or glycerine for deeper colour and better adhesion on skin and prosthetics. Build up layers for the most realistic result.

Pro tip: Layer dry Coal on the skin first, then go over it with a damp brush loaded with Plains Dust - it creates that ashy, charred texture that looks like real fire damage.

Setting and removing

For longer wear, especially in elaborate SFX looks, seal Coal with a setting spray. On skin it washes off easily with soap and water. On clothing and props: brush off the loose layer first, then wash as normal.
