Acrylic One Thixotropic A is a thickening additive for the A1 acrylic resin mix, developed for applications where the resin must not sag or run. Adding Thixotropic A converts the liquid mix into a gel-coat consistency, suitable for vertical surfaces, moulds, and open forms.

What is Acrylic One Thixotropic A?

Thixotropic A is an additive that increases the viscosity of the A1 mix without affecting working time. The cured resin retains the same properties as a standard A1 mix: fire-resistant, lightweight, and mechanically strong.

The additive is designed to create gel coats in moulds or on objects where the resin needs to stay in place during the working time. At 2% of the total mix weight, you reach the maximum achievable thickness. Adding more has no additional effect.

When to use Thixotropic A?

Use Thixotropic A when the standard A1 mix is too fluid for your application. This includes coating vertical mould walls, applying a first gel-coat layer in an open negative mould, or working on angled surfaces where the mix would otherwise run off.

Choose Thixotropic A when lining large moulds with an even first layer, or when hardcoating props and decorations without the material migrating to the bottom. For an even thicker, putty-like consistency, ATP Powder is the better choice.

How to use Thixotropic A?

Add Thixotropic A to the A1 Liquid before mixing in the powder. Dose a maximum of 2% of the total mix weight. Always weigh it accurately, as adding more does not increase thickening. Then add the A1 Powder as usual and work within the 20-25 minute working time.

Pro tip: Mix Thixotropic A thoroughly into the A1 Liquid using a High Shear Mixing Blade 65mm before adding the powder. This distributes the additive evenly and prevents lumps in your gel coat.

Combining with other Acrylic One additives

Thixotropic A combines well with ATP Powder when you need an extra-thick, putty-like layer. You can also combine it with Accelerator or Retarder to adjust working time, but never combine Accelerator and Retarder together in the same mix.

Always wear nitrile gloves when weighing and mixing to avoid skin contact.
