Scar Effects Gel is a gelatine gel from Ben Nye Makeup Los Angeles for raised 3D scar effects. You warm it until liquid, sculpt the shape quickly on the skin and let it cool into a firm, form-holding texture. Because it contains opaque flesh-tone pigments, the skin underneath is fully concealed.

How to use Ben Nye Scar Effects Gel

Place the bottle in hot water (bain-marie or a warm water bath) until the gelatine turns liquid. Work quickly before the gel cools.

• Direct on skin: apply the liquid gel with a spatula. Sculpt the scar texture as it cools and pull the edges thin for a convincing blend.
• Pre-made appliances: pour the liquid gel into a mould, let it cool, release with setting powder and store for later. To apply, use fresh warmed gel or Ben Nye Spirit Gum to bond the appliance to the skin.
• Layered build-up: apply multiple thin layers for deeper or thicker scars. Allow each layer to cool fully before adding the next for the sharpest definition.

Pro tip: Once cooled, tint the gel with creme make-up or Magicake aquacolour to add detail such as pink-red edges or a purplish discolouration. Knock back the shine and stickiness of the gelatine with a light dusting of Neutral Set Powder and a large powder brush. Build depth by adding extra layers only where you need more thickness.

Setting and removal

Scar Effects Gel sets on its own, no fixative is needed. For removal, work in steps:

• Skin: place a hot damp towel over the effect and leave for 30 to 60 seconds so the gelatine melts. Wipe off with a Wonder Towel and finish with a skin cleanser.
• Pre-made appliances with Spirit Gum: dissolve the Spirit Gum with Ben Nye Bond Off. Any remaining gelatine rinses off with warm water.
• Clothing and fabric: rinse immediately with cold water. Machine wash at 30 degrees Celsius with a stain remover. Always test on a hidden area first.
