What is Mehron Scar Wax?
Mehron Scar Wax is a professional modelling wax based on talc, microcrystalline wax, petrolatum and carnauba wax. Body heat makes it soft and pliable, so you can work directly on the skin without needing any moulds or casting techniques.
The Light shade is a soft beige that works for fair to medium skin tones, or for character looks on pale skin. For mid-tone skin there is Scar Wax Medium, and for deeper skin tones there is Scar Wax Dark.
Why choose this wax?
Smooth and workable: body heat softens the wax quickly, and it stays in place while you model. Sharp wound edges and thin skin transitions are easy to blend out.
Three skin tones available: choose the shade closest to your character's skin tone. That way you need less base make-up to blend the wax seamlessly into the skin. Professional standard: Mehron Scar Wax has been used for years in theatre, film, cosplay and Halloween. A 40g pot gives you dozens of small wound effects or several larger SFX builds.
How to use the wax
Step 1: soften the wax. Scrape a small piece from the pot and knead it briefly between your fingers until it softens. Don't overwork it, as wax that's too warm can become sticky.
Step 2: apply Spirit Gum (optional). For extra adhesion, apply a thin layer of Mehron Spirit Gum to the skin where you'll place the wax. Let it dry for a few seconds until it feels tacky.
Step 3: model the shape. Press the wax gently onto the skin and shape it into the desired wound form using your fingers or a Stainless Steel Spatula. A small amount of petroleum jelly on your tools keeps the wax from sticking. Step 4: set and colour. Finish by dusting the wax with Mehron Setting Powder to remove the shine and stickiness, making it ready for make-up on top. You can colour the wax with cream make-up, water-activated face paint or alcohol make-up to match the skin tone or character. Pro tip from Linda: for a blood effect inside an open wound, add a thin layer of Mehron Coagulated Blood Gel into the modelled cut once it's coloured. For dripping blood, combine with Mehron Stage Blood.
Setting and removing
The combination of Spirit Gum and Setting Powder keeps the wax firmly in place, even during long stage days or photo shoots.
Start by scraping off the bulk of the wax with your Stainless Steel Spatula. Remove any Spirit Gum residue with Mehron Spirit Gum Remover on a cotton pad. Then cleanse the skin with warm water and soap.
What can you use it for?
- Realistic scars and aged wounds for character make-up
- Cuts and fresh incisions for film and theatre
- Burns and skin distortions for SFX
- Bone-through-skin effects (combine with prosthetic bone elements)
- Zombie and horror looks for Halloween and cosplay
