What is Mouldlife Alginate FX9?
Alginate is a hydrophilic polymer derived from seaweed, with alginic acid as its main component. You mix the powder with water until you have a smooth, rubber-like paste that sets around whatever you want to cast within minutes. It captures every detail - from skin pores to fine lines - directly into the mould.
What sets FX9 apart from most other alginates is its self-bonding property. FX9 bonds to itself, so you can build up layers for larger lifecasts such as full face or hand impressions. Working time is 7 to 9 minutes. The colder the water you use, the longer your working window.
When do you choose Alginate FX9 over other alginates?
Choose FX9 when you need to cast complex or large areas in layers - a full face mask, a hand, a torso section. The self-bonding formula means freshly applied alginate sticks to the previous layer without gaps or air pockets.
The 500 g size is the practical working quantity for most SFX projects: enough for a full face lifecast with material left over for test mixes. If you do high-volume work - multiple casts per session, film sets, theatre productions - the larger sizes are worth considering.
How to use Alginate FX9
- Determine your mix ratio in grams (not volume): alginate is fairly flexible with ratios. Use 1 part alginate to 1-4 parts water depending on the application. For a bucket pour you can go wetter; for a face cast use less water so the mix holds against gravity.
- Mix powder and water to a smooth, lump-free paste. Colder water gives you a longer working time.
- Apply the alginate around the area you want to cast: skin, face or body part.
- Wait 7-9 minutes until the alginate has fully set.
- Cast immediately in plaster or silicone: alginate shrinks as moisture evaporates, so you cannot store the mould.
Key tips
- The alginate mould cannot be stored - cast it immediately in PlatSil Gel or plaster.
- Use cold water to extend your working time on a warm day.
- Test your mix ratio on a small object before starting a large lifecast project.
