All about Superstar Metallic Face Paint
Superstar is a Dutch face paint brand with a long history. The pots in this category contain water-activated face paint on a glycerine base with a shimmery or metallic finish. Easy to blend, well pigmented and suitable for beginners and experienced face painters alike.
Linda Gloudemans, owner of SchminkenGrime.nl, works with Superstar Metallic colours herself, at events, in her workshops and as a trainer in the NHA distance-learning course on theatrical make-up. Her experience as a make-up artist, trainer and examiner means she knows exactly which shades and pot sizes are practical in real-world use.
What will you find in this category?
This category contains individual Superstar face paint pots with a shimmery or metallic finish, in several effect types:
- Shimmer and metallic shades such as Antique Gold, Copper, Graphite and Peacock, for accents and statement base layers
- Pearlescent shades with a soft lustre, ideal for highlights and fantasy looks
- Dual-tone shimmers such as Ziva Blue and Golden Green, with two tones in a single pot
- Shimmer-with-glitter shades such as Silverwhite with Glitter and Gold with Glitter, for extra sparkle in one layer. Loose face paint glitters are available in a separate category.
Which size should you choose: 16 g or 45 g?
The right size depends mainly on how often you use a particular colour.
The 16 g pot is ideal if you want to build up a wide range of effect colours. That way you can easily put together your own face paint kit for festivals, photoshoots, stage productions or changing jobs. Do you use a lot of individual 16 g pots? The Superstar Snapcase for 24 pots is a tidy way to keep your colours together.
The 45 g pot is the better choice for colours you reach for regularly, such as gold, silver or a favourite shimmer shade.
How do you apply Superstar Metallic face paint?
Dampen your brush or sponge lightly with clean water and stroke it across the paint. Work towards a creamy consistency: not too dry, but definitely not too wet either. Then apply the colour in thin layers for a smooth, even shine.
For sponge work, wet the sponge and squeeze it out well. You can also work with a dry sponge and activate the paint lightly with a water spray bottle.
Linda prefers to use the Diamond FX Sponge Yellow for flat coverage and blending colours. For lines, swirls and detail work, take a look at the FBFX face paint brushes.
Removing face paint
Superstar water-activated face paint comes off with a face cloth or Remover Towel, lukewarm water and a mild soap or baby shampoo.
Do not scrub hard, and avoid using baby wipes. These can irritate the skin, especially on children or sensitive skin. Is the skin a little dry after removal? Apply a mild moisturising cream.
Storing your face paint
After use, wipe the pots clean with a sponge or cloth. Then leave the paint to dry without the lid. Only put the lid back once the paint is fully dry.
Store Superstar face paint in a cool, dark place. Keep the pots out of direct sunlight, as water-activated paint can soften with heat. Has a colour gone soft? Pop the pot in the fridge for a while to firm the paint back up.
