What is Mehron Spirit Gum Mat?

Mehron Spirit Gum Mat is the matte version of Mehron Spirit Gum. Once it dries on the skin, it forms a strong, flexible bond that holds up through movement, facial expressions and perspiration. Unlike the standard Spirit Gum, the matte version leaves no shine on the skin, keeping the adhesive invisible between fine crepe hair fibres, in HD close-ups and under bright stage or studio lighting.

The matte finish is particularly useful for crepe hair beards and moustaches where the skin is visible between the hairs. With standard Spirit Gum, a shiny patch would give the effect away. With Spirit Gum Mat, the adhesive disappears completely into the skin.

How to use Spirit Gum Mat

Step 1: prepare the skin. Cleanse the skin thoroughly to remove all skin oils, dirt and make-up. Spirit Gum bonds best to clean, dry skin.

Step 2: apply the adhesive. Use the applicator brush to apply a thin layer of Spirit Gum Mat to the area where you want to attach the prosthetic, crepe hair or wig.

Step 3: make it tacky. Allow the adhesive to dry for a few seconds, then gently tap it with your fingertip until it becomes sticky. At that point Spirit Gum Mat grips most strongly. Step 4: press and hold. Carefully press the prosthetic, bald cap, crepe beard or wig edge onto the adhesive and hold it firmly for around 10 to 15 seconds. Step 5: blend with make-up. Once the adhesive is completely dry, you can apply cream make-up or face paint over the edges to blend the join seamlessly. Pro tip from Linda: need an extra-strong bond on skin that perspires? Apply two thin layers of Spirit Gum Mat instead of one thick one. Let the first layer go tacky before applying the second. This gives the adhesive a better grip on both skin and prosthetic.

Setting and removing

Spirit Gum Mat is widely used for theatre, cosplay, Halloween and professional character make-up because it stays firmly in place through movement and long wear, without a shiny adhesive patch becoming visible.

Never pull Spirit Gum Mat off the skin, as this can cause irritation. Instead, use Mehron Spirit Gum Remover (30ml) on a cotton pad. Apply a few drops of remover along the edge of the adhesive and allow it to work for 10 to 20 seconds until the adhesive releases from the skin. Cleanse the skin afterwards with warm water and soap.
