What bald cap techniques can you practise on the Red Head?
The Red Head is built for one job: giving you a stable, reusable form to build bald caps on. Apply Baldiez, Super Baldiez or liquid latex in multiple thin layers, let each layer cure fully, then peel the finished cap off cleanly. Because the form is generic rather than a precise anatomical cast, caps produced on it fit a wide range of performers without major alterations.
The soft plastic surface flexes just enough to let cured caps release without tearing, which makes it especially useful when you are learning bald cap construction or producing caps in volume for theatre or film productions.
When do you choose the Red Head over a plaster or foam cast?
Plaster and foam casts are rigid and can crack under repeated flexing. The Red Head's soft plastic holds up to constant use and does not need repairing between sessions. That makes it the practical choice for training environments, SFX schools and busy makeup departments where the form gets used every day.
Choose the Red Head when you need a reliable, long-lasting form for production runs rather than a one-off custom cap. It is especially good for building up your technique with Baldiez or Super Baldiez before moving on to a bespoke cast of your performer.
How to use the Red Head
Clean the head form first, then apply a thin layer of Macwax mould release for a clean release. If the seam line on the form is visible, sand it smooth before your first layer. Spray or brush on multiple thin coats of Baldiez, Super Baldiez or liquid latex, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next. When the cap is fully cured, dust with setting powder, peel the cap off carefully and trim to fit your performer.
Pro tip: Always work in a well-ventilated space and wear respiratory protection when spraying Baldiez or liquid latex. Acetone fumes from Baldiez are harmful with prolonged exposure. Store the Red Head dry and clean between uses so the surface stays in good condition for the next session.
Safety and removal
Baldiez contains acetone and requires good ventilation and a suitable respirator mask during application. Super Baldiez uses an IPA blend and has lower acetone content, making it a less harsh option for enclosed workspaces. Always keep the room ventilated regardless of which product you use.
To remove a finished cap from the form, use plenty of setting powder on the cap surface before peeling. This prevents the cap from sticking to itself as you lift it away from the form.
What can you use it for?

- Practising bald cap construction during SFX training
- Producing multiple caps in advance for touring shows
- Testing new materials like Baldiez or Super Baldiez before working on a performer
- Creating base forms for age prosthetics and creature headpieces
